Why Urea?
Urea may sound scary or mysterious, but it is neither. This natural compound can improve skin hydration and make the skin less likely to tear (Health Science Reports, March 19, 2024). Physicians have found it helpful in treating a wide range of common skin conditions, from eczema to psoriasis, but especially dry skin (Annals of Medicine and Surgery, Jan. 9, 2025).
Even more interesting, scientists are experimenting with topical urea to treat seborrheic keratoses (Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, Feb. 1, 2025). These are sometimes referred to jokingly as “barnacles.” Some people accumulate large numbers of these raised non-cancerous growths. They may be the same color as the rest of the skin, or they may be darker. Dermatologists can remove them surgically, but many readers would like a less expensive and invasive remedy.
