Lemon Water Lowered High Blood Pressure

Drinking lemon water can help with weight loss and other health goals.

Controlling high blood pressure is an important cornerstone of good health. When natural approaches can accomplish this goal there is less of a likelihood of drug-induced side effects such as dizziness or sexual dysfunction.

Q. You recently answered a question from a person with high blood pressure and cholesterol who wanted to know about natural management. I’m in that boat as well.

With my family history, I’ll probably be on meds someday, but I’d like to delay that as long as possible. My doctor has recommended daily exercise, 3 grams of fish oil, red yeast rice and a magnesium supplement for high cholesterol. I also watch my intake of sugar and alcohol.

For high blood pressure I watch my salt intake (no processed foods) and drink water laced with lemon as a constant mild diuretic. I’ve lowered my cholesterol from 275 to 206 and dropped my blood pressure from borderline high to normal with this approach.

Exercise is a powerful tool in losing weight and controlling blood pressure. Fish oil and red yeast rice are proven approaches for cholesterol control.

Lemon Water

The lemon-laced water is a new idea for us, but it seems like a safe option. If your blood pressure is controlled you must be doing something right. We discovered that an ingredient in citrus fruit like lemons called auraptene can indeed lower blood pressure in rodents bred to have hypertension (Iranian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences, Feb. 2015).

Controlling Blood Pressure Naturally:

Many health professionals deal with hypertension by prescribing medications. That is understandable since medical school frequently focuses on drugs. But there are a surprising number of natural approaches that might work as well.

BlueberriesA study from Florida State University reported that blueberry powder reduced blood pressure by 5 to 6 percent. That is about as good as some medications.

Beet Juice: Beetroot has also been shown in scientific studies to lower blood pressure. This is accomplished by raising levels of nitrite in the bloodstream and increasing nitric oxide in the body. This can make blood vessels more flexible. One study demonstrated a reduction of 11 points in systolic blood pressure and 9 points in diastolic blood pressure. There are few drugs that can do that well.

My Age 30 my Bp level is always 140/86 i do running daily 45 mint but still not reduce 120/80 please suggess something

I have recently been placed on bp meds. Can I continue my routine of lemon water first thing in the morning?

I want to know if it is ok to continue my lemon water routine if I am taking hbp meds which I have recently been placed on.

My blood pressure is always around 140/110. The doctor prescribed two medications to be taken daily but even after that by bp rarely drops. I have been fumbling for natural remedies and recently I have been drinking ACV mixed with honey which seem to help a little bit. Together with that sometimes I drink some lemon water. I hope this is help me in the due course.

I have just started drinking water with lemon and lime. My Blood pressure is fluctuating between 141/90 mmhg .

Fresh garlic is great for lowering high blood pressure naturally. I make four cloves of fresh garlic water. Also, eat two bananas daily because the potassium may lower high blood pressure. Most importantly lower your salt intake.

I accidently made this same discovery myself in the past. My pressure was 200/100 and I monitored it twice daily. I was coincidentally using one medium size lime squeezed fresh daily.
Over time I discovered that my pressure kept dropping. And I found that I could throttle it with the amount of lime juice. Subsequent to my discovery, I searched the internet and found that this information is available in Ayurveda. Too bad our medical professionals don’t know this.

I drink lemon juice in water all day, but it was prescribed by my urologist to prevent kidney stones–which I have had in the past.

Since red yeast rice is nothing more than natural Lovastatin, it surprises me that Joe would mention this without reservation. “Natural” does not guarantee “safe” or “healthy.”

Drinking lemon or lime water on a daily basis will create acidic conditions in your mouth. It will be important to brush your teeth more often than normal when using this remedy, especially if you keep a glass or bottle of it at hand for sipping throughout the day. Consult your dentist before starting this regimen. He or she may give you a special toothpaste to prevent the loss of enamel on your teeth.

Please do NOT brush your teeth after eating or drinking very acidic things. The acids will soften your enamel, so brushing right after will just rub the enamel away. Instead, rinse with plain water or water with a little baking soda well mixed in after. Then spit out. There’s a toothpaste out there now, I believe by Colgate, that has ACP in it to help recalcify your teeth; or you can use MI Paste, ReminPro or Prevident – all by prescription from your dentist. BTW, I am a dentist. Free advice.

I would like to know more on beet juice for blood pressure, how often and how much to take

I shoot for my BP to be at least 140/90. From this site I found out that these are not dangerous numbers. My naturals include 1000mg fish oil – 300mg Omega 3 and a teaspoon of flax seed crushed every day on my breakfast food.

My BP has been in the 130’s over 80’s, and my doctor has no problem with that. It even was, once, 132/80. Also for the guys with prostate problems, of which I am one, I take the flaxseed for it AND pumpkin seeds. The bathroom is not a problem anymore. Nor the night trips. The naturals are GREAT with NO side-effects.

There is no quick fix if you have hbp. Exercise every day; cut out salt; watch the sodium content in foods; eat healthy meals (change your diet); do yoga; breathe deeply. Drink some beet juice every day. Magnesium helps; hibiscus tea. High blood pressure calls for a permanent lifestyle change.

I have had acid reflux , indigestion pains and burning and although medication works as soon as you come off it the problems are back for 1 month I have had half a lemon squeezed into a glass of warm water first thing in the morning and lo and behold my symptoms have all but gone . Wonderful!

It’s been really interesting reading these posts from people who are experiencing high blood pressure. I find camomile tea helps me reduce my blood pressure but it’s not very high. For anyone suffering very high blood pressure medical attention is required as high blood pressure is the silent killer. All of the advice given should be included in the day to day changes to improve health and this condition . Also no salt, processed foods and weight loss have to take place if you want to improve your health and wellbeing . Excersuse daily and yoga to relieve stress or something similar.

my case is unique (too long to describe) but I will simply say.
take 3 or 4 pieces of cinnamon sticks (purchase at your local grocery store) or order on line …. simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes, keep adding water if need be,more sticks if you want to have a reserve for the next day. you can leave the cinnamon drink (concentrated tea) on top of stove for days, it will not go bad on you…pour into a med-large cup and add (squeeze) 1/2 a lemon, add honey (if you cant handle it that way) and …..relax/enjoy it. it will certainly drop your nasty BP to a comfortable state. you can have this drink 3 or four times a day with lunch and dinner etc. now, if your case is LOW BP…stay away from cinnamon! I will also say that combining this healthy drink with your meds will be best. it has worked for us and some friends of ours. and always, always, tell your doctor about what you’re doing to help get to a comfortable controlled balance of your HBP/.
for those expressing anxiety issues of BP climbing wayy up,yes anxiety will hijack your BP to the top!.grrrrtt!…but this drink and a cold (COLD) quick shower will bring you down back to normal.
it’s certainty always good advice from a caring family doctor,(you’ve got to have one) appoint one to your family now.

I have recently been diagnosed with HBP. Mine is between 124/85 and 129/90. I was prescribed Atenolol with Lisinopril and I tried them for one month. Although they controlled the BP considerably, but the side effects were driving me crazy (coughing, feeling of depression, and nausea were part of my daily life). Keep in mind that everybody reacts differently with different medication. After complaining to my doctor, he put me on Diltiazem. Absolutely, no more coughing and feeling of depression, but bitter taste of the medicine threw my taste bud off the roof. Even water was bitter in my mouth. I decided to add lemon juice in my water constantly and that has revolutionized my life completely and immediately. What a powerful invention for me? I am by no means suggesting that anyone should neglect their doctor’s order because I am not a physician, but if you are not allergic to lemon, it can fix your taste bud to help you tolerate the medication to control your HBP. Please take time also to exercise and eat healthy food while you are being treated medically. God gives you a priceless gift of life. Please take good care of it.

My mother had a very high bp and all she did was get a young coconut that have nothing inside but water…no white meat inside the coconut,pour a glass of that young coconut water and add the juice of a lime and drink it every morning for a while and now she her bp is all gone to normal and she is taking nothing.

Hi everyone. I am 43yrs and my bp is 145/90. My doctor has placed me on amlodipine and lisinopril and she say I have to take these medications for life. I am worried about the long time side effects. Are there any other ways of controlling it without being on drugs? Thankyou

I’ve tried many so-called natural treatments and most only reduce your pressure 5-10 points or not at all. What works best for me is ginger (fresh grated) tea+hibiscus tea mixed. I also add a tablespoon of honey, a half lemon or lime (squeezed) and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. This mixture always lowers my blood pressure by 10-30 points in less than an hour. It also helped me to lower my prescription amount but you have to drink this mixture every day. I don’t mind making it because it cured my vertigo caused by too much amlodipine (blood pressure med). If your readings are less than 145/95 it’s worth trying but you have to remember to take it every day.

My Aunt of 70 years of age, her blood pressure went up 200 / 100. She received medication but the medicine she received it helped but not to the normal b/p. Then she was advised to squeeze one complete fresh lemon into a glass of water and drink it each morning. This practice according to her has helped considerably in further control to her b/p.

My boyfriend has malignant hypertension 245/137.
ER brings it down but we are still not sure what triggers it. Its such a concern.

Hi. I’ve never suffered with high bp, but just 1 day, my mouth start getting dry and just felt as though I was going to black out. Went to the hospital and my bp was high. I’ve suffered an anxiety attack once and now I’m not too sure if the anxiety had anything to do with my pressure going up. Its gone up 3 days in a row now. Advice plz. Thanks

The lemon water really does help to lower your B/P. I drink a cup of lemon water every day. I all ways get a tall glass of water and put a slice of lemon in it.

If you have Malignant Hypertension….Better get to the E.R. to immediately bring BP down…If you wait for lemon water to cure you, prepare for your journey to the gates of eternity, as this illness kills its victim in as little as a few months…

Please dont fool around with pressure over 160 top (systolic) or 100 bottom (diastolic). If you dont like your doctor, get another one.

I have vertigo, highblood, diabetic, and now depressed. My doctor advised to take lexapro antidepressant 5mg. Will it raise my blood pressure, just worried about taking lexapro, but I need some medicine to relax and calm me down. Hope to hear from you.c

Cinnamon tea 2-3 times per day, water lemon daily in the morning, Omega 3 1000mg, Olive leaf extract supplement. Use high fiber diet, include flaxseeds and oat bran if possible.

I would like to thank everyone that has put ideas on lowering BP here…. mine shot up but didn’t know it until I went to the ENT for prescreening to have a procedure done. It was through the roof and the surgery will not be done until it comes down. SOOOO I was put on a BP med and while I am taking it, there are side affects that I am not happy with. BUT love the idea of Lemon and Coconut Water and Red Yeast … have already made my drink. Thanks again everyone!

My 81 year old mother and I (55) started drinking FRESH LEMON water (1-2 glasses a day) with 2 slices of lemon (NO SUGAR)…
My mother’s cholesterol went from 283 to 243 in 2 months and mine went from 213 down to 183 in ONE month! The numbers will vary for each person but it WORKS!!! Mother said it has lowered he BP also! Our doctor is VERY pleased!!!

I also was told if you eat Cherries, it will lower your blood pressures. It even mentioned about putting a warm Cinnamon Tea with a tablet spoon of honey lower your blood pressures, too.

The only caution would be that if a person is suffering from Malignant Hypertension…220/120; the person must be given an immediate drug…Nitroprusside in the E.R. to bring the blood pressure down immediately…This condition can kill its victim in a short amount of time if left untreated…

Please all, for clarity sake, does this lemon juice and coconut water actually cure (where there will be no more need for medication or any daily taking of herbs) hbp or offers temporary relieve like the mainstream medication which one has to take everyday? I believe the reason we want alternative remedy is to be totally free from daily routine of medication and to be free from unpleasant side effect.

The lemon juice and coconut water definitely work and I can testify to that. My boss (of all people!) recommended it to me and in practically no time my pressure normalized.

I just checked my bp and cholesterol 2 weeks ago and both was high, my mother in law suggested half a teaspoon karela powder (bitter melon) in half a glass of warm water (make like tea) and drink morning and again at night and it works wonders. I was in doubt before I tried it, so I googled and found lots of other users that it has worked for, and apparently they do sell the tea and juices in certain supermarkets. And as for the cholesterol, I read that garlic works but I still have to try that.
I suggest that anyone wanting to try karela do research on google first.

I recently took my blood pressure and it was high, which shocked me. I talked with my mom who has high blood pressure, but it has been normal for years. She informed me to drink lemon juice with water 3x a day and this will naturally bring down my blood pressure. I was in disbelief, but after reading the comments from other people, I know some home remedies are better and safer for you. I will try the lemons and lemon juice and report back to the website after a week. Also, I have increased my physical activities. Will keep everyone informed!!!

I would strongly suggest you use the green lemons which are much acidic than the yellow lemons (including the skin). In Latino or Asian markets I have found these lemons for as little as 20 for one dollar (when in season) and 6 for one dollar when not instead of the crazy prices in places like Giant or whole foods. They have work magic for me to lower my blood pressure and to combat gout and clean my kidneys. I also have relatives that were able to get rid of kidneys stones drinking 1/2 a small cup of olive oil and a few green lemons early in the morning for a few days. It was pretty amazing to say the least. I hope that helps some of you…

Before taking a magnesium supplement, I would check with a doctor first to make sure the kidneys are not compromised in any way. If your kidneys are not functioning at an optimal level for your age, gender, and ethnicity, etc, you might further damage your kidneys. Magnesium and other minerals can harbor inside the kidney and finish them off.

I am a healthy man, 88 who had a circulation problem. After three opinions went for three stents last year performed by cardiologist from univ. penna. Also diovan160mg., amlodipine5mg., water pill chlorthalidone 25mg. for blood pressure. Only plavix and aspirin prescribed by cardiologist in penna., family doctor prescribed the other drugs.
My chloride level was low, and he suggested we change the water pill to furosemide 20mg because it would overcome the chloride low level. On examining the druggist warning, it states this drug can seriously deplete salt levels. I am overweight by 15-20 lbs. I feel if I could lose this weight, the blood pressure could be eliminated. Fishing for advice, I think about read to cut back on my meds, my chiropractor thinks I am over medicated. Oh forgot, chol. 179, hdl 60, ldl 101. Trygl. 64. Weight 194. 5-10

Try CALM for a great Magnesium supplement– go easy at first as it sometimes gives you the runs if you take to much– I suggest 1/2 teaspoon in 8 oz of water to start.

I am also interested in the numbers on Red Yeast Rice, please.

Another way to add some lemon juice to your diet is to use some in place of salad dressing. Just squeeze a little on your salad. I don’t even use oil any more. It helps cut down on calories and brings out the delicious tastes of the vegetables. I learned this when I was a waitress and a customer requested some lemon wedges instead of salad dressing. What a good tip I got that day.

Would putting fresh lemon in your green tea work as well? Always good to KTBWOS if possible. I drink my tea iced in the summer. I’ve also tried the beet thing, when I read about it they were recommending beet JUICE and I have no idea where I’d get that. It has lowered my lower bp some 5 to 10 points. Thinking about getting a juicer.

I’ve GOTTA try this lemon water thing. I’ve completely gotten off my cholesterol by using fish oil, red yeast rice, and niacin. BP is controlled with amlodipine/benazapril 5/20, but if I could get off this . . . WOW!

Use fresh squeezed lemon, as you can tolerate the tartness and drink several times a day, it’s especially beneficial first thing in the morning since it cleanses the system.
The bottled juices may be heated and preserved and no longer have the enzymes in it.
I use all vitamins and minerals in capsule form, less fillers and binders and more of
a guarantee that my system can break them down and absorb them. Swanson Vitamins puts most of their vit./minerals in gelatin caps and they have magnesium as 3 different kinds in one cap. (cheap). Magnesium greatly helped my friend with heart problems and the cardiologist said to thank me for recommending it!!!

Beets can be beneficial in the reduction of high blood pressure as well. After eating beets it is said to lower blood pressure within minutes.

How much lemon juice out of bottle to you take a day?

I take Magnesium, 250mg a day.My husband is an accountant and every morning he would wake up with a “pressure headache” he was skeptical when I told him to try the magnesium but he did, every morning after having breakfast, now the headaches are gone, just like that. I am not endorsing any special brand.

The writer’s Dr’s advice to try natural means is wonderful and rare. Most Drs give out prescription slips.
My Pettibon Chiropractor just used a new technique on my neck that he just learned. My blood pressure was doing OK, thanks to the supplements my Dr suggested, but this technique has now lowered it to where it was when I was a very young lady. Totally amazing! Both systolic and diastolic.

I would like to know the amount of red yeast rice and the strength (if there are different strengths) of the magnesium supplement. I would love to be able to control my marginally high cholesterol w/out simvastatin.

That approach works! I had borderline BP too and magnesium reduced it along with having a banana each day. I know the lemon juice works too because my grandparents use to have the lemon juice in some coconut water and when you have that, the pressure goes down. The added benefit of the lemon juice is that it also is an economical way to gently detoxify your body.
