Show 644: Health News Update on Soft Drinks & Statins

Soft drinks aren’t high on anyone’s list of healthy beverages, but at least diet sodas are better…or are they? Data from the Framingham Heart Study casts doubt on that assumption.

Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor and other cholesterol-lowering drugs are widely prescribed. Now the World Health Organization has detected a signal. Are these statin drugs really linked to a higher risk of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS)?

The Show’s Guests:

Vasan Ramachandran, MD, DM, FACC, was Professor of Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine, Framingham Heart Study.

Ralph Edwards, MD, was Professor of Medicine and Director of the World Health Organization’s drug-monitoring center in Uppsala, Sweden.
