Dr. Allan Hamilton trains a horse

Dr. Allan Hamilton is a neurosurgeon, a teacher and a horse trainer. Those activities may not seem to have much to do with each other, but Dr. Hamilton has found that horses have a lot to teach us about life and health.

Lead with Your Heart:

His book on the wisdom of horses, Lead with Your Heart, is full of valuable nuggets on horse training that have clear corollaries in everyday life. Here are a few examples: Patience is compassion. Finish better than you started. Never take a day for granted. Tackle small problems before they become big ones.

This Week’s Guest:

Allan J. Hamilton, MD, FACS, was previously chief of neurosurgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. He is currently professor of neurosurgery and clinical professor of radiation oncology. He also holds appointments in psychology and electrical and computer engineering. He is executive director of ASTEC, the Arizona Simulation Technology and Education Center.

His books include The Scalpel and the Soul: Encounters with Surgery, the Supernatural, and the Human Power of Hope; Zen Mind, Zen Horse: The Science and Spirituality of Working with Horses; and Lead with Your Heart: Lessons from a Life with Horses. All of his books have spiritual implications as well as practical applications.

I read his book and found it so helpful in just living life, dealing with children, paying attention and respecting others’ limits and strengths. I recommend this book highly.

Love your show, Joe and Terry. Allan Hamilton was a great guest. His advice made great “horse sense” to me which I will try to apply to my life in 2017. I entered the contest to win Allan Hamilton’s “Lead with Your Heart”. Can you or “Gleam”, who ran the contest for you, provide the names of the winners of Dr. Hamilton’s book?

What do I think? I think y9u have a lot of unhappy would be entries. I believe I am one of the many who had difficulty. I was able to order the CD on line but that was not my choice. The usual phone connection to order (same day as broadcast) would NOT take an order. This is hardly my first time to order. I do LOVE getting the podcast. I am disappointed not to be able to win the book and suspect that you would have had 3X the number of entries if said entry was more workable Sandy B. Va. Dec 26

Dear Joe and Terry, this was one of your best shows ever! I will listen to this podcast multiple times and will buy Dr. Hamilton’s new book. Thank you so much for this wonderful interview! I know you have had Dr. Hamilton on your show before, and he is always splendid — please continue to bring him on the show whenever you can!

On the page that has the CD, there is a place to choose your option. Choose mp3. It will be free.

  6. Rose

This my second request. (but the first one does not appear here)
I clicked on ‘download the mp3’ several times yesterday and today and all I get is the $9.99 CD screen. It is past Monday and should be available free today. Would much appreciate you checking this. Thank you.

To get to the mp3, use the “select option” pull-down in the box just above the “Add to Cart” orange bar. You’ll be able to get the mp3 and “buy” it for $0.

    Same problem–“…complete 1 action…” but doesn’t say what it is. Hmmmmm…

Interesting–I clicked on “edit,” went back to my entry, clicked on “notify me of other contests,” came back to the entry page, clicked “…confirm…,” then clicked on the Facebook link & presto! my entry was confirmed on the first line. Go figure…at least I’m entered.

  8. Mary

Same thing happened to me when I tried to enter to win a free book. Please fix this site problem.

  9. Brent

Like the others, the system won’t accept my entry, There’s “One more activity” for me to complete but it doens’t tell me what that activity is…

  10. Carole

I agree about the birthday request to sign up for the free book. I don’t freely give out my birthdate as it is part of a person’s personal security and is so especially on-line. The book sounds so interesting, having had horses in my life. I’m curious as to why you are asking for a birthdate?

    • Terry Graedon

It is part of the software we are using for the giveaway. We won’t be storing it or making use of it ourselves.

HORSES, AHHH! Relieve stress and bring light into the darkness. They are the love of my life, the mind connection is beyond that with a human. Horses know you, they watch your body language. A well trained horse can save your life, mentally and physically. Lowers your blood pressure. Riding a horse is the ultimate bond.

My husband and I are in our 60s and have had horses for over 20 years. The ones we have now aren’t our first, and we’ve learned a lot over the years since each horse is different. Our two geldings are really well behaved, and there’s absolutely nothing like riding through the woods or across a field and feeling that rhythmic movement. When my father was dying I made time to ride my horse, and that was such a stress reliever.

  12. Dick

I guess that is my problem too. can’t confirm that I am entered

  13. Holly

I agree. Same problem. Please fix this annoying bug !

  14. Mollie

I have the same problem. Not accepting my entry. “Needs to complete one more action” but doesn’t show what action!

  15. Portia

Unfortunately, the nearly flawless People’s Pharmacy seems to have an IT problem — as the same things has happened to me each time I’ve tried to order online — so much so that I’ve given up.
Save yourself the frustration and time, and call instead of trying to order online.
Otherwise, I loved this program on horse wisdom and the most recent program on relationships. Thank you.

  16. Helen

I also am not able to confirm my entry and it is very very frustrating!

  17. Alex

I wanted to sign up to try to get this book, but you are asking for my birth date. Why do you need this? I didn’t sign up because I don’t think that information is necessary for getting a free book. Why do you want my birth date? That’s one of the things that should not be used on the internet for trivial things.

  18. Mary Jane

I believe that any animal can teach us, if we are attentive.

  19. Kathy

I’m trying to enter the drawing for Dr. Hamilton’s book and keep getting the message that I have one more thing to do, though it doesn’t indicate what what I need to do. I hope someone can help me, please

  20. Marilyn

attempting to enter for “Lead with your heart”,but keep being told I need to complete one more action. What action?

  21. c

Right now, I am a little annoyed because this site refuses to confirm my entry for the horse book. Says click here and when you do, says you need to do something more BUT WHAT!

  22. Sarah K

For some reason I am unable to confirm my entry – I don’t know why.
