Why Are You Still Using An Antiperspirant?

If you are like us you have been working from home over the last year. Why use an aluminum antiperspirant if all you need is a deodorant?

OK, we know that habits are hard to break. If you’ve been using sweat stoppers for years, you may just automatically reach for a familiar brand. Of course during the pandemic, you may be shopping online. Chances are good that you are still sticking with something recognizable. But if you have been working from home, why do you even need an antiperspirant? Back by popular demand is our aluminum-free, economy-sized milk of magnesia deodorant with FREE shipping!

An Antiperspirant Vs. A Deodorant?

Unless you are working out like crazy or are under a tremendous amount of nervous strain, there is a very good chance you are not sweating profusely. For one thing, the weather has been cool-to-cold in most places. And spring is usually quite comfortable. You won’t start to really sweat until summer. So why use an antiperspirant?

Sweating is natural. It’s your body’s way to cool you down. Antiperspirants are the opposite of natural. The aluminum salts that are mandatory in all antiperspirants plug sweat glands. One dermatologist described it as “blocking pores.”

The FDA requires aluminum in all antiperspirants. That is why you will see ingredients such as Aluminum Zirconium Trichlorohydrex, Aluminum Zirconium Octachlorohydrex, Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex and aluminum chlorohydrate. Even so-called natural crystal antiperspirant “stones” contain aluminum, often in the form of alum. It is usually aluminum potassium sulfate.

What’s Wrong with Aluminum?

We have written about the potential dangers of aluminum for years. This article in the International Journal of Molecular Science (Feb. 12, 2021) suggests that aluminum is not good for the brain.

The authors introduce their “aluminium” (British spelling) research this way:

“Aluminium is the most plentiful neurotoxic metal on earth and is extensively bioavailable to humans. Aluminium is widely found in consumer products (e.g., antacids, deodorants, foods, water, and beverages) and has been used for industrial applications and in manufacturing (e.g., glasses, alum, and clays) for centuries. Aluminium’s free ion, Al3+ is widely recognized as a neurotoxin that disrupts more than 200 biological functions and causes several adverse effects in yeast, plants, animals, and humans. Studies have shown that a high daily intake of aluminium is associated with elevated risks of dementia or cognitive impairment.”

The conclusions of the study are worrisome:

“In summary, this study provides multiple lines of evidence that suggest and support Al3+’s probable involvement in AD [Alzheimer’s disease]. Further, it provides evidence that Al3+’s involvement in the development and cause of AD could be via a toxic synergy with Aβ42 [amyloid beta42], which may lead to neuronal cell death…Furthermore, aluminium’s ubiquitous presence in human lives is of great importance, as Al3+can cross the BBB [blood brain barrier]. Results of the current study provide crucial evidence and reasoning to consider minimizing our exposure to Al3+ as a preventative measure against AD.”

This is test-tube-type research. We are not about to tell you that daily use of an antiperspirant with aluminum has been shown to cause damage to the brain. On the other hand, there is no reason to expose yourself to aluminum unnecessarily.

Aluminum and Alzheimer’s: The Connection Gets Stronger!
Most people like aluminum. It is light and strong. The mineral salts are found in all antiperspirants. But is there an aluminum and Alzheimer’s association.

Magnesium vs. Aluminum:

Why not consider a deodorant instead of an antiperspirant? Even if you sweat a lot, sweat is usually not the problem. It’s the odor that freaks people out. Body odor can be unpleasant, even at home. That’s where magnesium comes in. We have been writing about milk of magnesia (MoM) as an antidote to body odor for many years.

Because MoM is so effective, we created a line of aluminum-free MoM deodorants to make application easier. We were the first to offer milk of magnesia deodorants. Because magnesium is essential for good health, we believe it is far superior to aluminum, which serves no beneficial biological purpose in the body.
