Fluticasone Propionate and Salmeterol

Advair Diskus is used for the long-term maintenance treatment of asthma. It is only for people whose ashtma symptoms are not well-controlled on other asthma medications, as one of its active ingredients (salmeterol) may increase the likelihood of asthma-related death.

I have copd, I had a flare up because I was not using an inhaler. I was put on advair disk, and also a rescue inhaler. I have noticed since the advair took affect the wheezing to be better. I still have some wheezing though. I however never had a cough or phlegm come up into my throat . Now I seem to have a cough and the flem, and after eating the phegm seems to be worse at times. Any one else having these symptoms? Thank you for any information. Jude

This is a dangerous drug for some at least, including me. Used for 1 month, 2 sprays per nostril per day. At first worked as advertised. After 2 weeks my voice grew increasingly hoarse. By week 3 felt like I had cold, coughing greenish phlegm, running nose, cold sores on lips, body aches. blood pressure way up and insomnia.
Finally I took it upon myself to read about the drug. It’s a big time steroid, related to prednisone, which is another horrible drug, but for the most part pred is only used for a short period of time. They want you to use Flonase for the rest of your life. Fat chance, quit today after 1 month, hope I’m normal within a week. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS ONE. Lots of eye problems reported on web including cataracts and glaucoma.

I use Fluticasone Propionate (generic Flonase according to Wikipedia) for seasonal allergies and it works great. There is no mention of Salmeterol on the bottle, so I don’t think it contains that substance. I wonder if there are any down sides to using this medication.

In 2003 my doctor prescribed Advair discus for asthmatic bronchitis and I used it as directed for a month. It caused a problem swallowing as it loosens the air tubes for breathing but also affected the throat muscle that closes the windpipe while eating. For some days I could not eat normally and was afraid of choking.
The druggist said that could happen, but my doctor did not believe it and ordered $500 worth of throat Xrays. I believe salmeterol is dangerous.
