When most people think of allergy treatment they almost always turn to medications. Antihistamines have been around since the 1940s. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) was originally approved by the FDA in 1946 but it was prescription only. Today, diphenhydramine (DPH) is widely available over the counter. It is marketed both for allergies and as a sleep aid. But there are some serious downsides to DPH. That’s why we are excited to announce a new non-drug allergy treatment backed by solid scientific research. We are pleased that SoundHealth is now supporting The People’s Pharmacy radio show, podcast and newsletter.
The SONU Band, a Non-Drug Allergy Treatment:
The SONU Band is worn around the head for 15 minutes a day. It uses acoustic vibrations to relieve nasal congestion. These sound waves are tailored to the individual’s sinus space using artificial intelligence. The non-technological equivalent would be humming, which has been shown to help ease nasal congestion. This technology is easier and quieter. The sound waves it uses are designed to be relaxing.
Studies indicate that the SONU Band offers relief from congestion that is equivalent to the effects of a steroid spray. It works for youngsters at least 12 years old as well as for adults. In a study of 52 individuals with serious nasal congestion, the SONU band was significantly more effective than a look-alike sham band (International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology, Oct. 9, 2023).
The investigators concluded,
“ART is a safe and effective non-pharmacologic alternative for the treatment of nasal congestion.”
According to Dr. Alan Greene, the People’s Pharmacy Pediatrician,
“As a noninvasive, drug-free solution, it addresses a significant need among families looking for safe, effective alternatives to traditional therapies, particularly those involving steroids or medications with side effects.”
