depressed and sad man

Q. I’m wondering what information you have about SAMe as a treatment for depression. I’ve been taking it for six months along with a daily B vitamin and have gotten great results. I would like to know if it’s really safe.

A. An analysis of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) in combination with folate (B vitamin) shows that this regimen reduces symptoms of depression without unpleasant side effects (Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, July, 2012).

Exercise, sun exposure and counseling are also helpful. You can learn more about them in The Depression Cure by Stephen Ilardi, PhD. You will find our interview with Dr. Ilardi on depression on our website. We also offer a number of recommendations on non-drug approaches to depression in our Guide to Dealing with Depression.

I just bought Sam-E for the first time this week. I too would like to know how much
to take and how often to obtain the best results…. response appreciated.
PEOPLE’S PHARMACY RESPONSE: One study used the dose of 800 mg twice a day. We suspect the investigators searched the literature to discover what dose would be effective.
    Here’s the abstract:

I took SAMe for just two weeks and had such server heart palpitations I had to stop. And the palpitations stopped. That is one of the side effects, so beware I wish I could take it since so many have great results.

So I just read the article above about SAMe and Vitamin B for depression. But it makes me absolutely CRAZY that nobody ever says what strength / how many they take per day to achieve those good results!!! Please, people, include this vital info when you report your results!
I am interested in this, and need to know – if someone would post this info, I would appreciate it, or of Joe or Terry could comment. Thanks.

I have taken SAMe but never for as long as 6 months as it is expensive for me. I don’t have medical insurance but even if I did, I wouldn’t take an RX so I try to find SAMe when it is on sale. I’m wondering how much works for people taking it, 400 mg/day? Or more? Because I’ve only been able to take it sporadically, I can’t say it has worked for me; I always take a strong multiple with B vitamins, so I’m covered on that score.

A few years ago a local psychiatrist spoke to our NAMI Education meeting. He said he uses SAMe daily to prevent depression. He has a strong family history of this illness.
It is my understanding that if the SAMe languishes on the store’s shelves too long,
    it loses it’s potency.
