Q. Do avocados have cholesterol? I've been told to watch my diet, and I've heard that I should avoid avocados, but I love them. Are they really bad for my heart?

A. Avocados contain no cholesterol, but they are high in monounsaturated fat. Years ago, diet experts thought that made them unsuitable for a prudent diet. But recent research indicates that monounsaturated fat in moderation is actually beneficial for heart health. So enjoy the guacamole, but watch out for tortilla chips. They may be cooked in hydrogenated fat, which is not good for your heart.
