Q. I've had bursitis in my shoulders and hip for years. Then I tried Certo (from the canning section of the grocery) mixed with 64 oz of white grape juice. I take half a cup daily. The pain disappeared in just four days like a miracle. No pain meant my hip relaxed and my massage therapist was shocked. I am in awe.

A. Thanks for your report. Many people find that a packet of Certo plant pectin (sold to stiffen homemade jams) dissolved in a half-gallon of grape juice eases joint pain.

I would like to know if it has to be grape juice. Can it be anything else, like water or is there something in grape juice that is beneficial?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: GRAPE JUICE HAS ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY, BUT SO DO SOME OTHERS. SOME READERS USE POMEGRANATE JUICE.

I'm guessing it should grape juice because another similar remedy calls for golden raisins, which or course are dried grapes. I'm trying this starting today. It would be so wonderful to have my hip bursitis gone.

Do you use 6oz. of Certo to the 64oz. of grape juice?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: IT IS EASY TO USE JUST ONE PACKET, THREE FLUID OUNCES TO 64 OZ OF JUICE. IT NEARLY CORRESPONDS TO 2 TEASPOONS TO 6 OUNCES.

Asked about the amount of Certo to the 64 oz. of grape juice failed to mark the box to be notified by email.

I have seen this "recipe" before but never with proportions. I just squeeze a little Certo into a cup of purple grape juice. Having it premixed would be a big help because you really need to shake it to mix it in properly. And it does seem to help the pain in my knees!

If I use the certo mixed into the half-gallon of grape juice, will this interfere with my blood thinner?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WE HAVE NOT SEEN ANY EVIDENCE THAT IT WILL.

Please clarify the amount of certo to be used... I used 1/2 packet of certo to one quart of white grape juice??? Is this ok?

I use (64oz.) 100% Welches purple grape juice (for the heart), add 3 pks.(1-1/2 box) of Certo, and drink about 6 oz. a day. I have done this for years and it really seems to help. I also eat 9 of the gin and raisins a day. By doing this I have been able to stay off of medication. It has helped my hip and knee pain.

Looking for relief, please advise the mixing ratio of Certo and grape juice.

Does it have to be "white" grape juice?" Lotta unanswered questions here.

Does it have to be white grape juice, or would purple grape juice work just as well? And I'd like to know the proportions of Certo to juice also, as some other commenters do.

I have talked with many folks who have used Certo and grape juice for pain relief since this first surfaced 20 some years ago. Anyone I talked to was thrilled with the results. I have seen this mix discussed frequently in the medical columns which appear in newspapers. Dr. Gott, for one. Always good results.

I have found that about 2 level teaspoons a day of Certo in a small amount of grape juice helps my hips. I only use about 4 oz. of grape juice since I am borderline diabetic. I am about 195 lbs so a smaller amount of Certo may help a smaller person.
I have tried the gin-soaked raisins and while they are kinda' fun, I could see no help for my hips from them. Other people may get better results though.
However, I also have gotten some relief from using Aspartame (5-6 packets) which I read about in The People's Pharmacy column years ago. It appears to have some anti inflammatory benefits for me.

I use one packet of Certo per 64 oz LITE Grape Juice. I needed to reduce the calories. You will have to pour some of the grape juice off to add the Certo; you can then add most back that you have poured out of the jug.

I too would like to know the mix ratio of the grape and the certo.

I've taken 1 TBLS with 8 OZ Grape Juice for several years now and believe it works. My question is I've never considered mixing a packet of Certo into the bottle of juice. will it last and not stiffen the juice?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: IT LASTS FOR UP TO A WEEK IN THE FRIDGE WITHOUT MAKING THE JUICE THICK.

I've used 1 TBLS Certo to 8 OZ Grape Juice for several years now with what I consider success. I'm asking those that pour the packet of Certo into the bottle of juice if it makes it stiffen or if it remains stable. It seems easier to prepare a whole bottle at once than one glass at a time.

I apologize for the double entry above, but I thought my first one didn't post. I thinking the person that posted at 11:20 AM stating one packet per bottle, may have answered. I might try that so I don't have to make a glass every day.

Can I just pour some of the grape juice out of the bottle, pour in the Certo, shake it up and then pour back the juice into the bottle?

I have read with great interest in Certo and grape juice for bursitis, etc.

Tried it today, but can't stand the sweetness of the grape juice (36 grams sugar in 8 oz. of juice, that amounts to 7 teaspoons of sugar) I am trying to reduce my sugar intake. Is their any other juice low in sugar, that will work?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: SOME PEOPLE REPORT THAT POMEGRANATE JUICE WORKS. BE SURE TO READ THE LABEL AND DON'T BUY A POMEGRANATE DRINK THAT IS MOSTLY WATER AND SUGAR. THERE ARE SOME "LIGHT" GRAPE JUICE DRINKS ON THE MARKET THAT PRESUMABLY ARE SOMEWHAT DILUTED AND HAVE HAD THE SUGAR REPLACED WITH A SUBSTITUTE.

There is low sugar content grape juice available in stores.

I use the LITE Welchs Grape Juice as I too must stay away from sugar. I pour the package of Certo in 64 oz bottle, and no, it does not thicken the grape juice

Do you continue to drink this daily even after the pain has disappeared or just take it as needed?

Please clarify that you are using Liquid Certo not the powdered version.
Two packets come in each box..... so the recipe should be 64 oz
of white grape juice and one liquid packet.... right?
Thanks for clarifying for me.

I personally take it daily.

Can you use Sure Jell (fruit pectin) instead of Certo??? Sure Jell makes Certo, I think.

Reading the comments it appears there are two forms, powder and liquid. All I found was a 1.75 oz powder. What are the amounts to use in the mix for both with 1 or 2 qt of grape juice?

Does the certo have any adverse effect on ones body?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: NONE THAT WE KNOW OF.

I'm having difficulty finding Certo in any form. People mention Certo in dry form in this conversation, but Certo's website only shows it in liquid form. Sure-Jell is made by the same company, and I do see that in stores. Is it the same thing? Are they interchangeable? If not, any suggestions as to where I can find Certo (I'm in the Los Angeles area).

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: SO FAR AS WE KNOW, CERTO IS AVAILABLE ONLY IN LIQUID FORM, IN POUCHES. WE DO NOT KNOW IF THE POWDERED PECTIN SURE-JELL WOULD HAVE THE SAME EFFECT FOR ARTHRITIS. EITHER PRODUCT IS SOLD IN THE CANNING SECTION OF THE SUPERMARKET, IF THERE IS ONE.

Certo Sure-Jell is the same thing. Have you tried here:

Just so I'm clear about the dosage... each liquid Certo pack is 6 oz's. Should I mix one 6 oz pack of Certo with 64 oz's of white grape juice?

I used the powder pectin from Save-A-Lot 99 cents and their brand grape juice 1.99. But it makes globs like jello in the juice, especially at the bottom of the bottle. Any advice for how to mix? Warm, room temp, or cold juice?

I found Certo at my local Ralph's here in L.A. county. It is near the baking supplies. My store (Pasadena/Hastings Ranch) had a few canning jars for sale and the packets of Certo were right right there!

The grape juice and pectin is working great. The bursitis pain used to kick in after I have been sleeping on my side for a couple of hours. If I drink the concoction in the evening, I have no pain. This seems to be a short-term remedy. Drinking it in the morning is not particularly effective, and from gaps when traveling, I know that skipping days puts me back where I was.

Diet "pure" grape juice? Not possible. Is it just diluted? If its been processed to strip off calories, it may be missing what's needed for this remedy. To keep the calories down, I have been diluting the grape juice with water. I suppose I could just drink it straight and gradually reduce the number of ounces until I find my minimum.

For those people who are concerned about the high sugar content, why don't you buy juice that is 'just juice', without any added sugars? There's lots to pick from in regular grocery stores, though you might have to look in the 'natural food' section of the store. You might pay a little bit more, but I've found it's usually the same price as a commercial brand like Welch's. If you have a Trader Joe's nearby, they sell lots of juice-only juices, including a Pomegranite/Blueberry juice that is full of anti-oxidants and no sugars. And, I never drink straight juice, I always cut it with half water. Helps keep the calories way down.

I have just started taking certo with grape juice. How long should it be used? If I see results should I discontinue using it?

I find it's a daily dose that's more effective if taken in the evening. If I stop, the bursitis pain is back in a couple of days.

This article is very interesting. I am going to try it, all else has failed to relieve my pain.

My husband drinks noni juice mixed in grape juice every morning. Is it okay to add the Certo to the mixture? He does not want to lose any of the benefits from the noni or grape juice my mixing in the Certo.

The white grape juice and certo has been working great for my arthritis - but can it cause PSA in the prostate go up ? I was down to 3.88 3/23/11 when I started taking the pain medicine. Now I'm up to 9.09 8/26/11. I have prostate cancer and have been treated for two years. Andy B.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WE DON'T KNOW OF ANY REASON WHY THIS WOULD AFFECT PSA.

In the 3 years I've been taking Grape Juice and Certo, I've had 3 PSA tests and so far nothing has changed. I agree with People's Pharmacy. Maybe you ought to stop the Grape Juice/Certo to see if your PSA goes down.

Ok, all I can find is the powder form. Is that going to be effective too? I am talking about certo, mixing it with white grape juice. Please give me the exact recipe for this when using the powder. I am having knee pain.

I did not find the powdered to be as effective. Perhaps I didn't calculate the ratio correctly; however, liquid pectin and powdered pectin are used at different points in the fruit canning process so must not be identical.

Found this on a food site:

2 tablespoons liquid pectin = 4 teaspoons powdered pectin

I've been drinking the Certo with grape juice for three weeks. I've since gained four pounds. I can't find anything on the carton or Certo pack itself showing the nutrition facts. It doesn't seem likely that the juice could produce such a weight gain?

I do not think the Certo (liquid pectin) is the culprit. There is a nutrition table on the powdered one. It shows 0 calories for 1/4 tsp. Our dose would not really be 0 but shouldn't be much.

The white grape juice is high in calories. I cut mine 50/50 with water and drink between 6 and 7 ounces each evening.

If the grape juice is the only calorie increase you've had this month, you are not a typical American. I am surrounded by temptations to eat more than I need.

Good luck.

I just tried the pomona powdered pectin and had trouble dissolving it in the cup of grape juice. Is the liquid Certo as effective? If so, I'd switch in a second to being able to avoid clumps and have the whole bottle done for a week.

Thanks for any help as my physical therapy ends next week!

In response to the person asking about pouring some of the grape juice out of the bottle, pour in the Certo, shake it up and then pour back the juice into the bottle? That's what I do, and there is not much juice left over from adding the Certo.

I definitely prefer the liquid. Easier to mix and more relief.

I have 4th degree arthritis in my right knee. I had 2 surgeries and some of my cartilage has been removed. My knee is bone on bone in one spot. I took Vioxx and Celebrex a few years ago, and it did help. My mother-in-law read that certo in white grape juice could help so I drank it for about 4 or 5 days. It worked!!!! I honestly haven't had ANY pain for months. I really can hardly believe it. I thought maybe I would have to drink it for quite a while, or would have to drink more when the pain returns, but nope. My knee was BAD, very painful some nights. I am very grateful to find this solution!!!

I use bernard jensen's concord grape concentrate made from whole concord grapes, including the skin. A little goes a long way and has minimal sugars and only natural sugar. 64 fl. oz and 2 packages of liquid certo.

Can you use unsweetened grape juice? Can you use the recently popular cherry juice?

I'm not sure. Use white grape juice for a few weeks as prescribed. Then, try one of your alternatives, and compare how much relief you get. Then, try the other. We woould all be interested in your results.

I too greatly dislike the cloyingly sweet taste of the grape juice. Instead, having read that a small glass of red wine, for me cheap and not sweet, improves memory, good for the heart and fights Alzheimer's, for which I have a family history.

I combined the Certo and 6-oz red wine and felt the results in 24 hours. My high Pain on waking went to a dull ache. Never has a dull ache been so enthusiastically greeted! Just began this combo two days ago and am hoping for even more results. Will report progress of my personal clinical trial, smile, as it proceeds. Will report the good and the lack thereof.

How much Certo does one mix with the white grape juice?

I have difficulty getting the certo to dissolve in the grape juice, it lumps.

I honestly do not know why SO has difficulty in mixing the Certo with grape juice. As I've posted above many times for several years, if you just use a glass of juice with Certo, just use a fork to stir it well. If you want to mix a bottle of grape juice, pour some juice out into a container, pour a bag of Certo into the juice, cap the bottle and shake vigorously. You can then pour some of the juice back into the bottle to fill it up. Hope this helps.

I just tried my first dose of liquid fruit pectin and 100% Welch's grape juice tonight. I can buy it at Kroger's for 3.99 I have had arthritis in my r knee for a long time and am tired of pain pills and they really do not do that much good. I can't walk on concrete at the store and my balance is off because of the pain.

The doctor says I am bone on bone. In August of 2010 I had a kidney removed but fortunately I have had no problems. In Aug of 2011 my primary care Dr told me not to take antimflamatories due to some blood work. I don't remember if it was my creatinine or potassium that was off. Creatinine was one tenth over the normal but my urologist didn't seem to be concerned. In May of 2012 they were both barely below the norm.

I don't want to harm my one kidney but I didn't know if the antiinflammatory in Welch's is the same as taking a prescription. Please respond. I have been told by several people that it does. Also, does this make you gain weight? My weight is fine and never fluctuates. I don't want diabetes on top of everything else. Tonight I took 1 tablespoon of Certo in half a glass of Welch grape juice. I know it is in my head but I do feel better.

I do dilute the grapejuice 50/50 with water to keep the calories down. It does require a dose every evening to keep hip bursitis pain from disturbing my sleep.

Does the grape juice interfer with blood sugar numbers? I am a diabetic.

A friend told me at work about it, took it and 3 days later I felt a big change in my knees, if you have not tried it give it a try worked for me.

Do you have any information on powdered pectin? It is difficult to find Certo in liquid form. Does powdered work as well? Also - white grape juice or purple? I'm confused!

I tried the powdered a few years ago - backed a ratio out using recipes - but did not think it was as effective. You can probably order a supply of the liquid packets on line.

Must be white grape juice. There's something in green grapes that is not in darker grapes.
