Q. I’ve suffered from severe lower back pain since 1964, when I was 14. In 1972, I was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis, fourth degree. In 1980 and 1986 I had surgical procedures to fuse my spine into place.
In 2004, I was told my spine had slipped again; I had scoliosis and osteoarthritis in the spine and pelvis. Then last year I read your book, “Best Choices From The People’s Pharmacy” and began the Mediterranean diet at the beginning of September.
I stopped taking Celebrex at that time. After three weeks, I was able to move my shoulders freely, despite previous bursitis, and no longer had pain in my spine and pelvis.
When I stopped taking Lipitor, the muscle and nerve pains and the tingling in my extremities disappeared. I’ve been able to stop taking all medication for any sort of pain since December.
Besides the freedom from pain, I love the feeling of wellbeing I’ve gained. I’ve shared the information with my cousins and friends and have given the title of your book to fellow patients I’ve met in the pharmacy or clinics at the Princess Margaret Hospital here in Nassau.
A. We are delighted that the anti-inflammatory benefits of the Mediterranean diet have relieved the pain from your serious back condition. This diet can also help prevent heart disease.
Best Choices From The People’s Pharmacy contains cost-saving remedies and recommendations for dozens of common problems. It is available in libraries, bookstores and online at www.peoplespharmacy.com.

I had severe muscle and back pain from statins, including Lipitor. All the while I took statins, on and off (the latter at my own initiative because physicians would not agree) I was on a diet similar to Mediterranean. I repeat: WHILE I took statins I was on the diet, as I am now. The severe pain modified when I stopped statins. Nothing treats the pain and disability of spondylolisthesis and the mutilating surgery they do for it. But it is somewhat better without the statin adding to the pain.
Statins only help middle aged men who have already had a heart attack, and some people who have occlusive vascular disese. They will not help anyone else, and in fact, as shown here, cause severe muscle and joint pain, increasing that one has from existing conditions and worsening them.
I don't have heart disease. What statins did to me was to cause me to be inactive because of increased severe pain. Inactivity, inability to do aerobic conditioning: that may cause heart disease. No-one wins on those drugs but the pharmaceutical companies and physicians who prescribe them knowing they have no evidence for benefit in the majority of their patients.
Article 5/11/09-Simvastatin/face flush red/extreme intolerance to heat. I, too, suffer these symptoms when in the sun. In addition to Simvastatin (Zocor), I take Atenolol, Levothyroxine and Estrace. Even with a hat on and sunblock, it takes me approximately three hours, to cool down and burning of my face back to normal. As in the article, I do not take Detrol, but Vit.B6 & Folic Acid. I've had this intolerance for many years and worse in the last few. I've taken Levothyroxine for 38 years, Atenolol for appr. 20 plus. I feel it is the Statin that possibly causes this intolerance.
We read this article but we need to know what the Mediterranean Diet is? What foods are on it? Can we please get some recipes?
I too was diagnosed at the age of 12. Refused the surgery as it made no sense to me. Was put in a body cast and then a corset with metal stays for many years. After 18 years of pain began doing yoga...has saved my llife.
Try it.
