Q. Is there anything in the way of vitamins or herbs that a person can take instead of a prescription drug for high blood pressure? I’ve heard about garlic, but I don’t like it much. Is there anything else?

A. The newest candidate for natural blood pressure control is beet juice. A study in the journal Hypertension (online Feb. 4, 2008) showed that two cups (500 ml) of beet juice lowered blood pressure by approximately 10 points. That is better than many prescription drugs. The effect lasts up to 24 hours.

Beets are high in dietary nitrate and increase the amount of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide (NO) helps blood vessels relax, lowering blood pressure. NO has anti-inflammatory activity and discourages blood clot formation.

A diet rich in vegetables and even dark chocolate can also lower blood pressure. Pomegranate and grape juice, magnesium supplements and breathing exercises can be beneficial. We evaluate a wide range of blood pressure medicines and alternative approaches in our book, Best Choices From The People’s Pharmacy. It is available from libraries and bookstores or online at this website.

Can you get the same effects from eating beets? I don't have a juicer and have checked a couple health food sections of large grocery stores and can't find beet juice.

One doesn't have to eat garlic to reap the benefits. I have kept my husband's blood pressure in check by giving him aged garlic capsules.

AFTER HAVING BREAST CANCER I had a silicone breast implant. After 5 years, I developed peripheral neurapathy in both arms and legs and high blood pressure, hypothyroidism and my implant got hard as a rock. I had it removed and sued Dow Corning. Unfortunately when they were losing all the cases because it was proved in the court that silicone harms the immune system, they went into bankruptcy. Fortunately I found a doctor who prescribed glutathione shots once a week. I know that has saved me, because I know 5 women who have died from this. Why did the FDA approve silicone?? Is money more important than human lives?

i was always told that beets and celery were too high in salt for people with hypertension.

iread your article on beet juice and hypertension, went to the health food store, could not find beet juice, but found red beet crystals.(certified organic) directions are take 1 heaping tablespoons in a glass of water 2-4x a day. i got sick each time i drank this. would you know why? i love beets and thought this would be a great way to lower my blood pressure.

I read your article about beet juice- needing 2 glasses a day-wow, when I first started juicing after breast cancer I juiced beets by themselves and got really sick. When I felt so bad after the second time I realized it was from too much concentrated beet juice. I had 8 oz. and that way too much for me, when I juice them with carrots and apples it's just fine. Thanks for all your great advice.

Can you eat can beets and drink the juice and get the same results?
I have been using beetroot powder and mixing w/water, but I can never get it mixed without it tasting gritty. What am I doing wrong?

I take blood thinners (Warfin) eating beets and/or drinking beet juice, will that affect my blood?
