Is Bisphenol S Just as Risky as Bisphenol A?

Replacing the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A with bisphenol S instead may not make plastic or paper receipts safer. BPS could make breast cancer worse.

Bisphenol A (BPA) has acquired a nasty reputation as an endocrine disruptor. Manufacturers have been scrambling to find alternatives to this compound. But are the replacements, such as bisphenol S, really any safer?

Problems with BPA Replacements:

Replacing BPA in common products allows manufacturers to claim their goods are BPA-free. It doesn’t mean that the plastics, receipts or paper currency containing replacement compounds are safe.

Bisphenol S, or BPS, is one of the most widely used replacements. Testing in breast cancer cells shows, however, that BPS also mimics estrogen and is an endocrine disruptor.

Increased Risk of Breast Cancer:

Bisphenol S induced breast cancer cell growth just as estrogen does. The researchers believe that BPS might make breast cancer more aggressive.
