dry lips with sand on them

Are your lips dry and cracked or moist and kissable? At this time of year a lot of people are suffering from dry cracked lips. That’s because the weather has turned cold and the heat is on. Humidity is way down. Every time you lick your lips you make them worse. Go ahead and try it right now. Lick and then wait a minute. The temporary relief is fleeting. Is your lip balm making your lips worse? Have you ever tried to read the ingredients in your lip balm? Unpronounceable, right? Ready for something better? Why not save your lips and save 25% off Natural Lip Balms from The People’s Pharmacy?

Lick Your Lips & Make Them Worse!

There are two possible reasons why lip licking dries your lips. A renowned dermatologist once told us that 1) licking lips removes the natural oil barrier secreted by your lips. And 2) as your saliva evaporates, it dries out your lips even faster. Think of it as short-term gain, long-term pain. Lip licking is tempting but counterproductive.

Beware Sunscreen in Your Lip Balm!

Most of the popular lip balms contain sunscreen ingredients. That may be fine in the summer when you are at the beach. It makes almost no sense in the winter unless you are planning on skiing in bright sunlight.

A little-known downside to lip balms that contain sunscreens is the irritation factor. Do you ever read the ingredient list on your lip balm? Most people can’t pronounce these chemicals and wouldn’t know why they are there. Here are some sunscreen ingredients that may cause some people trouble:

Sunscreen Ingredients in Lip Balms:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Avobenzone
  • Benzophenone-3
  •  Octocrylene
  • Parsol SLX
  • Octisalate

 Why Should You Care?

It seems counterintuitive that a lip balm could cause the very irritation you are trying to prevent. Yet here are some articles that discuss allergic-type reactions in susceptible people. (Contact Dermatitis, Feb. 2014Dermatitis, Dec. 2007Dermatitis, July-Aug. 2015Contact Dermatitis, July, 2006).

Toothpaste Trouble and Lip Sensitivity:

When your lips are already dry and sensitive, the last thing you would want to do to them is add further irritation. And yet many toothpastes contain the ingredient SLS (sodium laurel sulfate). It is a foaming agent. It is also a detergent that is found in many personal care products such as soaps and shampoos. It is a common ingredient in toothpastes.

You have been told to beware detergents on your dry, chapped hands. Why would you put a detergent and emulsifier in your mouth and on your lips? It’s hard to avoid some contact with your lips when you are brushing your teeth.

Why Not Go Natural? Save Your Lips!

One of the most renowned natural product chemists in the country helped us develop People’s Pharmacy Natural Lip Care for your lips. He worked for one of the most famous natural cosmetic companies in the world.

We were fortunate to have him formulate our all-natural lip care products to soothe your chapped lips. The lip balms come in three terrific natural flavors: pomegranateberry and chocolate mint.  They contain natural oils: olive oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil to moisturize that delicate skin. Even more important, they contain no petroleum products at all, nor do they have sunscreens that can sometimes be irritating.

Reader Testimonials:

Here is what people have to say about our People’s Pharmacy lip Balms:

Susan offers this vote of confidence:

“About five years ago I developed allergic reactions to any lip balm, even the ‘natural’ ones. I have tried many. I’ve been using The People’s Pharmacy Pomegranate Natural Lip Care for at least three years without any allergic reactions on my lips. It’s been such a relief to have found a lip balm I can safely use.”

Anne in New York gives us 5 stars out of 5!

“I Love that I do not have to keep reapplying your lip balm. I have used Chap-Stick forever (I am 72) here and in England. Your lip balm is the best. I love the taste and have one in every pocket so I am never without. Would definitely recommend.”

Wendy offers great advice for stocking stuffers:

“I have tried so many lip balms over the years! This is the one I am sticking with. It stays on longer than any others I have used. It keeps my lips feeling better than any of the rest of the natural ones I have tried, and the taste is so mild that it doesn’t offend my nose or lips at all.

“I ordered a bunch to give to friends and clients for Christmas gifts. The tube lasts a long time, too, and I have noticed no rancidity in the ones I have from last year. Great product, as is the MoM deodorant. Thank you.”

Speaking of our MoM deodorant…

Pam in Texas gives us 5 starts out of 5!

“I was skeptical but it works. I decided to try this product because I wanted something without aluminum. I’m not a big sweater but if I forget to use my antiperspirant, my underarms stink after a few hours. I’ve washed them in the sink at work a few times because I could smell myself!

“With this product I don’t smell at all. In fact, I think it works better than my antiperspirant does for odor. At first, I thought it would dry white, but I was using too much.

“I’m a believer now!”

Ken in Jupiter, Florida says it succinctly:

“The best ever.”

Michelle in Michigan agrees:

“Love this… I’ve wasted hundreds maybe a thousand of dollars on ALL kinds of promising deodorants. This is the BEST!”

I wish I could use your lip balm, but it has bees wax in it, which I’m allergic to. It’s so hard for me to find one without. Any suggestions ?

When lips are dry, it means you need more water. This is the same for cramps, a good glass of water will help.

Again: If we should refrain from licking our lips, why are your lip balms flavored?

Just curious why you did not include Biotene toothpaste as another huge aid in treating lip sensitivity. It is SLS free and ends the nagging discomfort of our sensitive lips. That and using your lip care products have greatly improved my comfort level.

I vote for unflavored! I split my lip in half yesterday. I’m desperate!

I am 81 years old. When I was 9, my parents were going through a divorce and I was sent to Maine to stay with my grandparents for a while. My lips became chapped and I asked my grandfather if he would get me some Vaseline lip chap stick. With a gruff voice, he told me I didn’t need that stuff. He took me out to the backyard shed, reached into a bag of rock salt, handed me a big chunk of rock salt and told me “use this and your lips will get better, that other stuff will just make your lips too tender”. I knew better than to talk back, wet the rock salt with saliva, rubbed it on my lips, and even though it stung some, it began to help my lips heal. I kept a piece of rock salt with me all winter that year, my lips toughened up, and to this day I have not had to use any kind of lip balm. True story!
