Drinking Chamomile Tea May Protect the Thyroid from Cancer

People who drink chamomile tea may be less likely to develop thyroid cancer, according to a case-control study in Greece.

A small Greek study offers the intriguing possibility that chamomile tea may be protective against thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer rates are much lower in Greece, where many people follow a Mediterranean diet, than in the US.

This study compared the dietary habits of 113 Greek patients with thyroid cancer to those of 138 people without thyroid cancer. People who drank chamomile tea more frequently were less likely to have thyroid cancer.

Chamomile tea is made from the flowers of an herb (Matricaria chamomilla) and has no caffeine. It may be an interesting and helpful part of a Mediterranean diet.
