Reports from public health officials indicate that influenza is widespread around the country. The predominant virus causing illness is a variety of H3N2 that is not covered by the flu vaccine because its genes drifted away from last year’s strain. Holiday travel may help spread infections even faster than normal.
The CDC has recommended the antiviral medicines Relenza or Tamiflu be prescribed for people who become ill with H3N2 flu.
The only trouble is that there is a shortage of Tamiflu in many parts of the country. Because the drug is most effective if it is taken within the first two days of symptoms, a shortage during the peak flu season could leave many people without its potential benefits.
Although Tamiflu doesn’t cure the flu instantly, it can shorten the duration and severity. It must be taken in the first few days of the infection to be helpful, however.
