Vegetable Compound Outwits Cancer Cells

A compound found in vegetables like celery, parsley artichokes and spinach as well as red wine and chamomile tea may play a key role in controlling cancer cells. Cancer cells are resistant to normal cell death called apoptosis.

Scientists at Ohio State University have discovered that a compound found in these foods and beverages called apigenin may take the brakes off cancer cell death. Apigenin connects to a protein in cancer cells that seems to protect them from apoptosis.

This test tube research will require clinical testing to prove the concept. But following a Mediterranean-type diet that is high in apigenin is worthwhile regardless.

Drinking chamomile tea might also be a terrific idea since it is relatively high in apigenin. It is a non-caffeinated beverage that is great in the evening and is very relaxing. If it could also help combat cancer that would be an added bonus.
