Celery Seed Eases Pain of Gout

Q. I’m a roofer. One day I thought I’d broken my toe but the doctor said I was in the gout club. I’ve tried everything, and only one thing works: celery seed extract (3 tablets a day) and plenty of water (2 to 3 liters a day). No more gout!

A. You are not the only one to find celery seed extract helpful in treating the excruciating pain of gout. You can find more stories here. Celery seed was used traditionally to ease joint pain from “rheumatism,” which may have included gout.

Some people have also found that tart cherries can be beneficial for gout pain.

People who have had an attack of gout are often advised to avoid seafood and beer. One study found that women who consume high-fructose beverages such as soft drinks or fruit juice are also at greater risk for an attack (JAMA, Nov. 24,2010).
