Description

Gluten has become a household name in the last few years, with crackers, cereals and other food products, even bread and cookies, advertised as gluten free. What are the symptoms of celiac disease or gluten-sensitivity and how do you go gluten-free without suffering? Find out in this Listen & Read offer from The People’s Pharmacy, which includes a CD of our broadcast interview and the book, Gluten Freedom.

Why should you care about gluten?

In the past, the only people who paid much attention to gluten were those with celiac disease, and doctors believed that this autoimmune condition was incredibly rare in the US. Dr. Alessio Fasano did the research that showed celiac disease is just as common in the US as in Europe, but it is underdiagnosed and undertreated.

The consequences can be severe. People with celiac disease suffer terribly if they consume foods made from wheat, barley and rye, which all contain gluten. Their immune systems attack and destroy the lining of the intestine when gluten is present. This can lead to a wide range of nutritional deficiencies and a number of not-so-obvious symptoms, including anemia, chronic fatigue, migraine headaches, osteoporosis and even dementia.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity

Now, Dr. Fasano and his colleagues have discovered that some people who do not have celiac disease are also sensitive to gluten and react badly to this protein. Could you be among them?

Who is the expert?

Alessio Fasano, MD, is Director of the Center for Celiac Research and division chief of the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. He is also a visiting professor at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Fasano is our guest on the show and the primary author of Gluten Freedom, a research-based book that separates fact from fiction about how gluten affects health.

He reviews the spectrum of gluten-related disorders and describes leaky gut and autoimmune reactions. He reveals how to follow a gluten-free diet at every stage of life. It does not have to feel like punishment: donÕt miss the chapter on eating a delicious, traditional and entirely gluten-free dinner with Dr. Fasano.

The book contains crucial information on preventing gluten-related disorders and new treatments still under development.

The Listen & Read offer includes the book and a CD of the show at a 15% discount off from the price of purchasing each item individually.
