Ginger Tea for Colds
Home Remedies
We love this remedy and use it whenever we feel a cold coming on.It came to us from a radio listener in the hills of West Virginia but originated with her grandmother in India.
Grind about half an inch of fresh ginger root into a paste and place in a mug. Add boiling water and "steep" for several minutes. Strain the clear liquid into another mug, sweeten, and sip. Our symptoms start to subside within about twenty minutes.
We drink this in the morning and evening, and our cold usually gets better by the second day.

I have used a similar tea for colds/ flu (I sometimes can't tell which is which). I use the ginger and add a clove of garlic and a jalepeno pepper all in a teapot of hot water. I drink the tea while having a bath, then wrap myself up in a robe and always fall deeply asleep. If I do it at first signs I don't get a cold (& it tastes much better than you'd think!).

I have a personnal experience of using ginger tea. For two consecutive years after a prolong, forceful cough (from one to two months) I totally lost my voice, and my ENT doctor diagnosed me as a case of chronic laryngitis; lozenges and other medication was prescribed but there was no relief.
Then I was told by the old women from our place to avoid cold drinks and to take "salabat" (in our dialect ginger tea) and then my voice returned. It is also good for sore throat and harsh voice.
