Teens with Concussions May Struggle in School

When adolescents suffer concussions, they may need assistance during recovery to overcome a negative impact on their studies.

A surprisingly high proportion of teenagers who suffer concussions on the playing field or as a result of an accident may still be experiencing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness and trouble concentrating four weeks after their injury. A study published in Pediatrics found that 240 out of 349 youngsters who had suffered a concussion were struggling with such symptoms.

Symptoms and School Troubles

Those who had symptoms also reported difficulties with school work and studying. Children experiencing mood changes following a concussion were also more likely to have trouble completing homework assignments or taking notes.

Making Allowances for Recovery

Teachers and administrators may need to make special allowances for young people who have had such an injury. Accommodations should be tailored to the severity of the symptoms to speed recovery.
