When Allergy Treatment Aggravates the Symptoms

Allergy medicines that trigger allergic reactions can make symptoms worse and be difficult to detect.

People suffering from an allergic skin reaction might be shocked to realize that sometimes the cream or lotion they use to calm their rash or hives could be making it worse. Scientists reported to the Annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology that it can be difficult to identify an allergic reaction to a topical corticosteroid.

Likewise, some people do not tolerate antihistamines or drugs used to treat asthma. Their symptoms just seem to get worse, but because they already had symptoms, no one may realize that itching, wheezing or other allergic reactions might be a response to their allergy drug.

This type of reaction has been reported by readers who found that their lip balm contained lanolin. While this moisturizer derived from sheep’s wool is natural and can be quite helpful, people who are sensitive to wool or lanolin may find that applying the lip moisturizer more frequently just makes their chapped lips progressively worse.
