Prenatal Exposure to BPA Could Increase the Risk of Prostate Cancer in Adulthood

The hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol A has been found in a wide range of consumer products, from plastic water bottles and the linings of food and beverage cans to cash register receipts and tooth sealants. A new study suggests that when a male fetus is exposed to BPA in utero, there could be an increased risk of prostate problems later in life.

Experiments involving embryonic stem cells suggest that low doses of BPA may reprogram prostate tissue and make it more susceptible to precancerous lesions.

The People’s Pharmacy perspective suggests that pregnant women might want to stay away from cash register receipts, canned soup and other sources of BPA. The risks to human fetuses are still unproven, but animal studies and tissue culture research has raised a number of alarm flags.
