Low-Carb Regimen May Reduce Risk of Recurrence for Some Breast Cancer Patients

Limiting carbohydrates in the diet may be beneficial for survivors of breast cancer, especially those with receptors for insulin-like growth factor. These receptors, called IGF-1, are associated with breast cancer recurrence.

A new case-control study of 265 women found that survivors who cut back on carbs were less likely to experience a return of their IGF-1 positive breast cancer.

In the People’s Pharmacy perspective, reducing refined carbohydrates is probably good for everyone, especially anyone concerned about cancer recurrence. When we spoke with David Servan-Schreiber, MD, author of Anti-Cancer, he recommended a diet that would lower insulin peaks and suggested that sugar and other refined carbs should be kept to a minimum. We offer recipes for dishes that are low in refined carbohydrates in our book, Recipes & Remedies From The People’s Pharmacy.
