Medicines such as finasteride (Proscar) and dutasteride (Avodart) have been used to ease the symptoms of prostate enlargement. At first, experts believed that these medications might reduce the risk of prostate cancer. A clinical trial suggested, however, that they might simultaneously increase a man's risk of a serious prostate cancer.

A new study collected data on nearly 40,000 men between 1996 and 2010. Approximately 10 percent of the men developed prostate cancer during that time. The Harvard researchers found no relationship between the use of finasteride or dutasteride and high-grade prostate cancer.

The men taking such drugs were less likely to develop prostate cancer at all, lowering their risk by approximately 5 percent. This should make men more comfortable about using these medications to help control symptoms of benign prostate enlargement.

[JAMA Internal Medicine, online June 2, 2014]

Men may wish to discuss a different side effect of these medications, however.  Some men report lasting difficulty with sexual function even after discontinuing the drugs.

Being 77, I have had a large prostate for many years and for a long time had problems with the stream when going to the bathroom. I took one of those stupip pills that had so many BAD side effects, that was supposed to help and it did, but the side effects, especially long term are not worth the treatment.

THEN, I found out, from a comment made here on Peoples Pharmacy, that PUMPKIN SEEDS work to help that situation. BELIEVE ME, it works. I take 2 teaspoons every morning with by breakfast and have very little, if any, problems going to the bathroom. And, it is cheap, and you can take all you want WITHOUT ANY SIDE EFFECTS. It's all natural and NOT sold by some drug company at inflated prices.

You can buy the salted or unsalted. shelled or not shelled. I buy the unsalted and shelled and the taste is GREAT. What more could you ask for?

Give it a try, what have you got to loose?

I use stinging nettle 300 mg. Not sure how much it helps. Whast are more options?

what else works without sexual side effects?

I'm Torrence. Read my comment on People's Pharmacy for a GREAT option to the prostate problem.
