Q. My dermatologist recommended Vanicream for the terrible rash on the front of my legs (that appeared as soon as the furnace was turned on this past fall).  I apply it as soon as I get out of the shower and it works!  No more rashes.

I'm also going to try the Udderly Smooth Extra Care with 20% Urea as my hands have been terrible this winter (sandpapery + those nasty paper cuts that hurt unless you put bandages on your fingers).  Thanks for sharing the great information on urea.

A. We're glad the Vanicream worked for your rash. It contains white petrolatum (petroleum jelly), sorbitol solution, cetearyl alcohol, propylene glycol, ceteareth-20, simethicone, glyceryl monostearate, polyethylene glycol monostearate, sorbic acid and BHT.

The urea you mention is especially excellent for dry, cracked skin. We like this ingredient because 1) it's natural and 2) it improves the barrier function of the skin.

Dermatologists writing in the prestigious Journal of Investigative Dermatology point out that topical applications of urea have multiple beneficial effects on skin. Not only does it normalize the physiology of seriously dry skin, it also improves the natural antibacterial activity of the skin.

Finding a skin cream with significant amounts of urea is not that easy. That's why we are so pleased that the makers of Udderly Smooth Udder Cream (who support The People's Pharmacy radio show and website) have developed Udderly Smooth Extra Care 20 with 20% urea.

We are offering a super sale on our Winter Skin Survival Kit from The People's Pharmacy. It contains 4 People's Pharmacy Pomegranate Natural Lip balms plus 2 Udderly Smooth Extra Care 20 tubes with 20% urea. Keep a tube in your pocketbook or jacket pocket and one in the kitchen or bathroom.

To take advantage of this super sale, click on this link. The retail cost of the 4 lip balms and 2 Udderly Smooth tubes is $23.94. The 30% discount is automatically computed in the shopping cart so you will save $7.18 on each order. Let us know how they work and don't forget to share your own secret to surviving the winter weather.

YOU SHOULD TRY OR CHECK TO SEE IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC OR SENSIBLE TO SOAPS. I was with medication -hydrocortisone- for 4 years before I decided to check sensitivity or allergy to something. They found out I was allergic to almost every soap, specially the 'fine' soaps like lux, ivory etc…I stopped immediately; and I was several months with antibiotics because I got infected hands and other parts of the body. Now I am careful the soaps I use, to wash myself and wash the clothes (I only use ALL with no dye ).

ah, I forgot to mention, in some countries ( &Asia..) and the military during war, they use to pee over their hands & feet, that also helps if you can't find anything else.

I use glycerin emollient for dry skin. It is available at most drug stores, not expensive and it works very well on hands and arms.

I don't get a rash, but I do get terribly itchy skin around my torso, and my hands get awfully dry. I've used many different lotions with varying results, but never liked the idea of using petroleum-based products. I've found something that is natural and works better than any of the lotions ever did, and that is glycerin and rosewater!

You can mix your own, or you can buy a ready-mixed product, which I find at a health-food store. I get the ready-mixed kind and add a little more glycerin. All it takes is a small amount rubbed in after a shower -- and then there's no itching at all. It's not greasy, and it's great!

Before bed I use a little glycerin and rosewater and blend with either castor oil or an herbal, olive-oil based salve. It's a little tacky at first but I like how it feels on my hands. And in the morning my hands feel perfect.

My dermatologist told me not to use soap on the dry skin areas on my legs, in the winter. I also rub a little pure coconut oil on the dry skin. Works really well. I'm allergic to the ingredients in skin products, so I have to avoid them.

What creams are good for the dryness that DO NOT contain petrolatum? I am allergic to petrochemicals.

Good old fashion mineral oil, used all over my just showered body is the best for skin care, that I've found. It is absorbent and leaves the skin soft and smooth. Been using it for years.

Help for psoriasis?

I use rubber finger tips bought at an office supply store. Dab my finger in petroleum jelly (Vaselin) and cover with the finger tip for the night or sometime during the day when I can. The finger tips come in few sizes to fit different finger size. It helps a lot for dry skin around the nails.

Are there any creams that are safe to use on the face? Is Udderly Smooth Extra Care 20 with 20% urea safe for the face? I have been using Vanicream and it does work, but I don't care for all those ingredients. Any answers? Thanks.

People's Pharmacy response: Some people use it on the face, but caution suggests testing it on a small area first to see how your skin reacts.

Is there anything I can use to help my 4 year old son with his eczema. He gets dry red patchy blotches on his thighs legs back of legs and his ankles. I've been using hydrocortizone for about 3 years and now it doesn't work for him anymore.

I had eczema really bad till a friend told me to use Aquaphor (HEALING OINTMENT) It worked, my eczema is almost gone. I put it on at night before bed
and the next morning after I shower, it works give it a try!! Let me know if it worked for you!!
