You don't need a thermometer to know how hot it is these days. Half the country is experiencing a heat wave that is overwhelming. That means many of us are sticky, sweaty and SMELLY!

Unlike much of the populated world, we go to great lengths to control body odor. We shower frequently and apply antiperspirants religiously. But at this time of year, even the "best" products may not perform adequately. Using high-concentration aluminum-containing antiperspirants can also be irritating to delicate skin. And many people just prefer not to use aluminum. That is in part because the question of "The Neurotoxicity of Aluminum Is Still an Issue."

Despite reassurances, research continues to suggest that aluminum is not good for the brain:

An article in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease concludes that "...the involvement of Al [aluminum] in the pathogenesis of AD [Alzheimer's Disease] should not be discarded..."

Recent research published in the journal Immunologic Research (July, 2013) has reinforced the concern about aluminum neurotoxicity:

"The literature demonstrates clearly negative impacts of aluminum on the nervous system across the age span. In adults, aluminum exposure can lead to apparently age-related neurological deficits resembling Alzheimer's and has been linked to this disease..."

We don't know exactly how much aluminum it takes to harm the brain. What we can say, however, is that we love magnesium! This is a mineral that is often in short supply in our diets and it is absolutely essential for good health. Just for starters, magnesium is crucial for normal heart rhythm, bone building and muscle function. Many medications (especially diuretics and acid-suppressing drugs called PPIs) can deplete the body of this important mineral.

Not only is magnesium found in many antacids (Maalox, Mylanta), it is also the main ingredient in milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide), a laxative that has been used for almost 140 years.

A few years ago we heard from a reader of our newspaper column that MoM (milk of magnesia) was a terrific deodorant. We tried it ourselves and we were convinced. Not only is it gentle to underarms (and does not stain), it controls body odor beautifully. Other people tried it and also reported success:

"MoM is all I've used for over a year now. I have a landscape management business. My work would challenge any deodorant. As long as I start out with fresh clothing the MoM never fails. Spraying my clothing with white vinegar before I put it in the washer helps kill lingering bacteria that can quickly compromise sweated in garments."

"My preteen has been battling body odor for a long time and I know he was getting tired of me telling him to go take a shower and "scrub." That never helped! We've tried every type of deodorant/antiperspirant we could find, but nothing worked. When I read that MOM helps this situation I went out and bought some. I wasn't really expecting much, but I was SO surprised and pleased! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful idea!"

"I heard the idea of using MoM on The People's Pharmacy radio program on the very day I decided to find an alternative to aluminum-based antiperspirants. It does work great, and I have been using it on my feet too, where it also works great. I've found that when I'm really hot, I do sweat some and have a little odor but once the sweat dries, there's absolutely no odor on me or my clothes."

The only problem was applying milk of magnesia. We would pour a little milk of magnesia into the palm of one hand and then try to slosh it into our armpits. MESSY! Using a cotton ball was a bit easier...but not handy when traveling.

That's why we came up with The People's Pharmacy Milk of Magnesia Roll-On Deodorant. People seem to really like it:

"After being allergic to almost every deodorant I have ever tried, this one is super. I don't itch, and my underarms stay dry and fresh smelling. It is the best I have ever used and very reasonably priced."
Doris J.

Baking soda also makes a pretty darn good deodorant. Just rub it in well, and brush off any excess. One caveat: I use the kind from a health food store, and it says it contains no aluminum. I don't know if the major brands do contain aluminum, or if so, how much there is.

All you need to do is use an empty pump soap dispenser and one pump is enough.
It works great. Also buy generic because it is cheaper.

I finally tried the MoM treatment for the pits. I am sold, it works great! I don't know what was holding me back. I have a small spray bottle that was left over from a body spray, it works great. Traveled nicely with me this summer. At home I use a folded over wash cloth to apply (it dries faster). I found that the cotton balls caught on my pits and left me looking like Santa's beard even after a recent shave. I highly reccomend it to anybody and everybody. My daughter is sold :0)

For years I have had problems with being allergic to deodorants, causing terrible underarm itching. I tried youy MOM roll on and it works! Not only does it stop the odor, NO MORE ITCH! I can't say enough for it. And it dries a lot more quickly than most roll ons. Try it-you'll like it!

I am excited about the discussion about dry eyes. Having tried every kind of drops recommended by doctors that give little relief, the possibility of a new treatment called Lipiflow is something that I will talk about with my ophthalmologist. I am 79 years old and enjoy reading and tennis for which dry eyes are a nuisance.

I read the article expecting to find how a deodorant works. I couldn't.

After reading about your MofM roll on, I purchased 2 bottles and received one free. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and I'm sold. It dries quickly and does not stain my clothes plus it works to suppress body odor. Thank you.

I tried everything to eliminate a really bad sweet smelling perspiration odor that seemed to include not only the armpits but also an area about 3" above and below. My dermatologist suggested it might be a bacteria problem - like some men have with their feet. He suggested Hibistat soap. I had had this problem for almost a year and after 1 swipe with a Hibistat wet wipe, it was completely eliminated.

We have found that when the smellyness just does not wash off, we wash with hydrogen poroxide and poof the smell is gone. I am anxious to try the mom.

I just got your MoM roll on deodorant this week. I LOVE it! I am allergic to castor oil & it is in all kinds of solid deod./ antiperspirant. I switched to a roll on & still had reactions to something else. I used the MoM roll on & NO REACTION! YAY!! I am happy that it has no aluminum in it also! Thanks!

I've tried and like it. Just before I read this and saw the info about the special deal, I ordered 3 roll-ons. Any way to get the discount now?

Also wonder, what is the difference besides price of the 2 roll-ons without fragrance?

Thanks for all the info you give us!

Peoples Pharmacy response: The difference between the original formula and the aluminum free formula is that the original contains bentonite as a stabilizer. This natural clay contain some aluminum derived from the surface of the earth. The aluminum free formula contains no aluminum whatsoever. The synthetic stabilizer we substituted for bentonite is a bit more expensive, which explains the difference in price.

I never use deodorant. I shower when I have sweat a lot. I do not find the smell of fresh sweat offensive. There are some people, a small minority, that do truly stink and I feel for them.

Read the ingredient label on the generics before buying. My husband bought me one with saccharin in it. I didn't trust to use that on my skin.

I ordered 2 of the MOM deodorant and I must tell you - I Love It! It works, no aluminum, no mess (the roller works very smoothly as opposed to some) and I am absolutely sold on this product. Thank you.

One has to start on what is going IN the body to control odor. Many years ago I found out that eating unnatural oils such as canola, Wesson etc. made my body react in a putrid fashion. We eat only organic coconut and palm oil, natural butter and olive oil. I use the drippings from organic bacon in our cooking.

Rarely do I have to use a deodorant and when I do it is a natural spray by TCCD. One other thought too is that I do NOT use soap. I am in the spa and pool every evening and have found that simply rinsing body areas well works fine.

I have been using regular MOM for some time. Recently switched to the new women's MOM...what a difference. I have a problem with excessive sweating under 1 arm and strong odor...after 3 weeks using the new formula all that has disappeared. And no irritation like previously used products from store. Thanks.

This is to MR: It is my understanding that Baking Soda does not contain Aluminum. Baking Powder contains Aluminum!! Just read that last evening.

Just bought the MOM deodorant for my daughter. The smell is gone! But she still needs an antiperspirant for the wetness. Any suggestions?
