Too often the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is filled with excess. Starting with turkey, stuffing, lots of mashed potatoes and gravy, not to mention pie (pumpkin, pecan, apple or sweet potato) and proceeding on through parties with chips and dips and fancy drinks to Christmas cookies and eggnog, temptations to depart from sensible eating are everywhere.
Celebrating the season doesn’t have to mean gaining weight, though, and healthy eating isn’t restricted to raw broccoli and oat groats. It IS possible to enjoy delicious food that is good for us as well. Dr. John LaPuma, Chef MD, tells how to enjoy healthy holiday feasts and follow up with great food for good health (and even weight loss) into the coming year.     Dr. LaPuma had some good ideas and I am sure he adds quality to his patients’ lives. Two quibbles would be the daily use of citrus juice and lovastatin/red yeast rice. Perhaps hand squeezed fruit is better, but commercial juicing releases oxalates from the fruit which combined with elemental calcium in most pills, many foods and calcium supplements could substantially increase the incidence of kidney stones (calcium oxalate).
    Many pills, such as melatonin, may not even have the calcium which is used as the cheap binder listed as an ingredient. Perhaps less frequent use and attention to eliminating elemental calcium on the “juice” days would be better.
    Lovastatin disturbs REM sleep in every patient I have seen using the drug. The sleep disturbance was the reason most doctors switched to Zocor and Pravachol when they became available.
    Dementia is reversible when the drug is stopped, however many patients are continued on this drug which should not be on the market. Sleep studies of Red Yeast Rice should be done. In the meantime, patients using this “natural” drug should be alert to dementia. (oxymoron?)

    Towards the end of todays show I heard Dr. LaPuma state that visceral fat in men converts testosterone into estradiol (estrogen) which leads to development on breast tissue, shrinkage of the testes, low libido, etc. I’m curious as to what (if any) effects on hormones visceral fat has in women?
