Sodium Lurks in Bread and Rolls

Americans have been urged to cut the amount of sodium in their diets. But to do that, according to the CDC, people will have to eat a lot less bread and rolls. It seems counter-intuitive, but these seemingly bland staples actually supply more than twice as much sodium as pretzels, potato chips or popcorn. It’s not that bread is super salty, but rather that Americans love bread and eat a lot of it.
Sodium is one of those hidden ingredients that can lurk in unexpected placed. Next on the CDC list is lunch meat such as deli turkey or ham. Put lunch meat between two slices of bread for a sandwich and you have a really high-sodium meal. Pizza, soup and cheese are other sodium-rich selections. The top ten sodium-rich foods are responsible for nearly half of the salt that is consumed daily. Making a few changes can have a big impact on total sodium intake.
