Q. I have a problem with sweaty armpits no matter how much deodorant I use. I know that there are times when I don't smell so great.
I would like to avoid using aluminum in antiperspirants as much as possible because I have heard that it might not be good for the brain. Are there any home remedies that can help?
A. Let's face it, we all have BO no matter how clean we are. Most of the time it is not offensive, but sometimes we are faced with situations that are stressful. Then, even though we have showered in the morning and used an antiperspirant, we may have a nervous smell that others can detect.
Even in the winter time we perspire and that can lead to body odor. Most people think the solution is an aluminum-based antiperspirant. For many it works, but we don't know how much aluminum is absorbed into the body. After all, the arm pit has delicate tissue.
That is why we love milk of magnesia as a deodorant. Most of us are low in magnesium anyway. Were we to absorb a little, that would probably be a good thing. And if you can swallow milk of magnesia as a laxative, then we suspect that rubbing a little on your underarms is even safer.
Although we encourage people to try the liquid laxative as a deodorant, it can be a bit tedious to pour into your hand and then try and slosh it on your underarm. That's why we developed The People's Pharmacy Milk of Magnesia Roll-On Deodorant. Here is what some readers have to say:

I finally tried the MoM treatment for the pits. I am sold, it works great! I don't know what was holding me back. I have a small spray bottle that was left over from a body spray, it works great. Traveled nicely with me this summer. At home I use a folded over wash cloth to apply (it dries faster). I found that the cotton balls caught on my pits and left me looking like Santa's beard even after a recent shave. I highly reccomend it to anybody and everybody. My daughter is sold :0)

After reading about your MofM roll on, I purchased 2 bottles and received one free. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and I'm sold. It dries quickly and does not stain my clothes plus it works to suppress body odor. Thank you.

I am amazed at this milk of magnesia as deodarant. No one will believe me until they try it, but I have eczema and use it to control the itiching when I have out breaks. I read your article on how it help poison oak, so decided to give it a try on my eczema and it works!! Not only helps the itching, but will dry it up with daily use. Thank you for all your helpful information.
I also suggest varying vitamin intake. I have found that some vitamins can cause body odor.
I have to try it--if it works it has to be cheaper than regular antiperspirant.
When I stopped eating sugar, I noticed that my perspiration's smell was weaker. I've heard people say this about eliminating red meat from their diets. In other words, it may be worth experimenting with types of food consumed.
I mix equal parts baking soda, vaseline, and cornstarch for a very effective deodorant. I will give the MofM a try though. However, my homemade deodorant is very powerful and lasts all day. It doesn't stain my clothing and I only need a very little.
When I was small, my mother started me on using baking soda for deodorant. Just wash and apply a dab of dry baking soda on the damp skin. I do this every morning and have never had an armpit odor problem (82 years old).
I started using MoM after hearing about it on P Pharm. I decided to try it and it works great. When I tell other people about it they look at me quite strange and think I have lost it. I've tried to get people to try it for acne or other skin blemishes, but to no avail. I'm still happy with it as a deodorant or anything else I can use it for. Also, it doesn't stain your clothes as deodorants with aluminum do.
I am 55 yrs. old & in the middle of menopause. I have been told that I have developed a "unclean" body odor, which I can't think of anything else other than menopause that could be causing the problem. I will give MOM a try. Is it safe to use in the "folds" around the private areas that sweat so much during menopause?
People's Pharmacy response: We don't have an answer. There have been no studies.
Can you add a few drops of essential oil to give it a nice scent and antibacterial properties (if it doesn't already..)? Such as lemon and eucalyptus?
