Walnuts may be as good for the breast as they are for the heart. Researchers have known for nearly two decades that walnuts have cardiovascular benefits. For one thing, regular consumption lowers bad LDL cholesterol. Now researchers have discovered that walnuts can help protect against breast cancer in mice. Scientists found that female mice given walnuts as part of their food were 50 percent less likely than females on a control diet to develop breast cancer. Tumors that did appear in the walnut-eating mice were slower to progress.

Walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that can reduce inflammation, but the researchers suggest that this alone does not account fully for walnuts' power against breast cancer. Other antioxidants and phytonutrients may also be contributing to the anticancer effect. The mice were given a quantity of walnuts that would be roughly equivalent to about 2 ounces of walnuts daily for a woman (approximately 28 walnut halves).

What kind of walnuts? Black walnuts or English walnuts?

What about the interaction of taking Synthroid and Walnuts. What is it about walnuts that on the pharmacy print out it warns against eating them. Had to stop taking Simvastin for cholesterol due to leg and joint pain. Anyone have any reason to stay off walnuts please post. Thanks

I have heard so much about the health benefits of walnuts, not only for this but for many conditions, including brain health. Indeed it seems almost a MUST-HAVE food. But walnuts make my mouth sore. Is there a way to counteract this without diminishing their nutritional content?

English Walnuts, Alice can you chop them very fine and work them into baked goods, mix in peanut butter or jelly so the nuts don't come in contact with your mouth for long -buffered by other foods.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WE HAVE NO DATA ON THIS, BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT PEOPLE WHO DON'T TOLERATE WALNUTS (WHO GET MOUTH SORES OR A BURNING SENSATION) SHOULD PROBABLY STAY AWAY FROM THEM. OTHER NUTS SUCH AS ALMONDS OR PECANS ARE ALSO BENEFICIAL FOR HEART HEALTH, IF NOT BREAST CANCER. WE ARE NOT ALL ALIKE, AND PEOPLE WHOSE BODIES OFFER THEM WARNINGS MIGHT DO WELL TO PAY ATTENTION.

Is it better to buy them in the shell & crack them yourself or are the ones in the jars just as healthful?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WHETHER YOU SHELL THEM OR THEY ARE ALREADY SHELLED SHOULD NOT MAKE MUCH DIFFERENCE.

My mouth also burns from eating walnuts & I need to eat something sweet to take away the burning. It is brief & I want to continue eating them but wonder why this happens. Should I stop eating the walnuts?

PEOPLES PHARMACY RESPONSE: WE SUGGEST THAT IF WALNUTS BURN YOUR MOUTH, YOU SHOULD CHOOSE DIFFERENT NUTS.

I too, have mouth sores if I eat walnuts, and am frustrated hearing all the benefits --- what else can we, who walnuts don't like, do? I have no problem with any other nuts. I'm also on Thyroid medication and have heard not to eat walnuts if on it - what is that about??? I hope someone answers. Thanks.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: ALTHOUGH SOME FOODS SUCH AS SOY AND VEGETABLES IN THE CABBAGE FAMILY CONTAIN COMPOUNDS THAT INTERFERE WITH THYROID HORMONE, WALNUTS ARE NOT LISTED AS GOITROGENS ON THE LISTS WE HAVE FOUND.

THE MOUTH SORES ARE A DIFFERENT ISSUE. THEY SUGGEST YOUR BODY WOULD DO BETTER IF YOU CHOSE OTHER TYPES OF NUTS.

I agree that walnuts are good for us as are many types of nuts. However, if a person has kidney stones, eating nuts is not advisable. At least that is what I have learned from a specialist at a reputable teaching hospital.
