Q. My 8-year-old son was stung by a wasp this morning for the first time. He'd found a wasp nest and stood right next to it, screaming at the top of his voice while jumping up and down. Naturally, a wasp stung him on his back through his T-shirt. Considering he was surrounded by hundreds of them, it could have been much worse.

I used cut onion on the sting, and it worked brilliantly. Thanks to the person who suggested scoring the onion, as that got much more juice out and was very effective.

A. Freshly cut onion contains an enzyme that breaks down inflammatory compounds responsible for the pain of a wasp sting.

What will help relieve the swelling of a wasp sting? I was stung today but did not have any onions, meat tenderizer, or ice to put on the sting and now my hand is twice its normal size.

Would this work also for other types of bites such as mosquitos or bee stings?

My land has been overrun with red wasps (Mahogany Wasps) this summer, literally thousands outside. I have been stung twice on my hand while walking. The first sting was bad enough, but the second one felt like a bullet. After trying the usual baking soda paste and watching my hand continue to swell like a balloon I tried the cut onion. It really helped the pain. My hand stayed swollen for days so next time I will try onion first.

I do know that a roll on antiperspirant with aluminum chlorahydrate (sp?) will stop the itch from mosquito bites. It must be the roll on, not stick.

I, too, would like to know if the cut onion will help with bee stings, yellow fly bites, yellow jacket stings.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: IT EASES THE PAIN ANS SWELLING; IT WON'T HELP IF THERE IS AN ALLERGIC REACTION.

Am new to this site, it's very interesting, love it... this is what I have been doing for some time and it works, when you get stung by a wasp etc. immediately take a copper penny (has to be the old fashion copper penny) and tape it to the spot where you got stung, and believe me, it relieves immediately, no swelling no pain, I believe its the copper that draws out the poison. Hope this helps, my friends and I do it faithfully when we get stung.
