Q. The California raisin producers should hire me, since I irritate my friends and neighbors by yapping nonstop about gin-soaked raisins. After reading an article on your website about unflavored gelatin, I added that to my regimen. Now I wax enthusiastic about that as well. I take glucosamine-chondroitin too.

My aging canine best buddy was developing a limp. I fed him gelatin and glucosamine-chondroitin and, by golly, the limp is gone and he can chase a ball. You might attribute my results to a placebo effect but not my dog's. He can't read.

Before all this, my condition had deteriorated to the point where I was in serious pain. Not any more. The effect is not instantaneous, but it is worth a try before surgery or other invasive procedures.

A. We're glad you didn't try the gin-soaked raisins on your dog. Raisins are quite dangerous for dogs, but veterinarians have been prescribing glucosamine for stiff canine joints for a long time.

We have seen no research on the effects of taking unflavored gelatin, but other readers attest that it can help alleviate joint pain.

For lots more remedies to ease aches and pains, we are sending you our Guide to Alternatives for Arthritis with details on herbs like turmeric, boswellia and ginger as well as answers to FAQs about preparing the raisins.

I'd like to try this remedy for joint pain but gin makes me break out in hives. Any other, similar suggestions?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WHY NOT TRY SOAKING THE RAISINS IN VINEGAR AND HONEY? YOU'LL FIND A RECIPE ON THE WEBSITE.

100% grape juice + certo. Turmeric spice on food. Aqua-chi treatment. Any anti inflammatory foods will help like: cherries (dark red).

Just curious: Why are raisins dangerous for dogs?
I've been using turmeric for joint paint, and it seems to be working. So does exercise (particularly the elliptical machine, which doesn't bother my knees as much as the treadmill).

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: RAISINS ARE TOXIC TO THE KIDNEYS OF CANINES. WE ARE NOT QUITE SURE WHY.

Hi! We've been doing the gin & raisins for a couple years & definitely notice a difference in our joints. I've also been taking a Special formula turmeric product & know it helps me & have been seeing turmeric helps in preventing cancers. It's 20 yrs. since I was diagnosed with breast cancer & so far no repeat performance; so it must be helping. I was highly allergic to tamoxofin & have also taken grape seed extract capsules & Pau'D Arco daily-also known herbs to help prevent cancers. CAR

In response to the comment about substitutions for the gin, I read on the People's Pharmacy column earlier that a reader used apple-cider vinegar (with or without honey) in place of the gin to soak the raisins. Seemed to work for that person.
