Q. I've read that something in coffee raises cholesterol. I also read that using a filter to prepare the coffee blocks this compound. I guess if I drink instant coffee, I'm raising my LDL cholesterol. Is that true?
A. It depends somewhat on how much you drink. The cholesterol-raising compounds in coffee, cafestol and kahweol, are found in very low levels in instant coffee and in filtered coffee (Food and Chemical Toxicology, June, 1997).
Most of the early research connecting coffee consumption and elevated cholesterol found that traditional "boiled" coffee made in the Scandinavian or Turkish styles could raise serum cholesterol significantly (New England Journal of Medicine, June 16, 1983).
Twenty years later, however, researchers in Sweden found that filtered coffee could raise serum cholesterol more than previously appreciated (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Sept. 2003). Other researchers found that five cups of instant coffee daily could result in a small but significant increase in cholesterol (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Oct. 1995). Drinking a few cups of instant coffee is not likely to change your cholesterol dramatically.

Thank goodness, finally, one thing I DON'T have to worry about!
I drink three to five cups of coffee a day. (mostly Tasters Choice) My cholesterol was out of balance. Because of a very bad heart condition, my doctor wants my HDL to be over 40 and the LDA less than 70. I was running HDL of 35 and LDL of 78. Coffee was not discussed as a possible problem. I had a choice of taking another pill or a glass of red wine a day.
I elected the red wine and drink 8oz a day. In three months my HDL went to 46 and my LDL went to 62. Well with in his recommendation. He would prefer I used only 6oz a day. My overall cholesterol is 125. I have been on this a year now and all blood test shows the same results. Hope this will help others.
I am 52 i drink instant coffee and sometimes it make me sick in the morning before I eat any thing my LDL/HDL was high but better now so I tried something, I didn't drink coffee. The next day I feel better. I think I need to eat first than drink maybe 1/2 cup or don't drink instant coffee at all what do you think?
