Kick-Boxing Granny Wants Bruise Remedy

Q. I am a 70-year-old very healthy woman (still doing kick boxing and aerobics). However, I sustain very ugly bruises, especially on my hands and arms.

I take Cozaar, verapamil and Estratab. I also take rutin, which is supposed to help the bruising though it does not seem to make much difference. Do you have any suggestions?

A. We are impressed with your activity. If you are blocking a partner’s kicks with your hands and arms, are you wearing protective pads? That might be the first step to take to prevent bruises.

The next step is to talk with your doctor. The blood pressure pill verapamil can occasionally cause bruising all by itself. Ask if a different medication would be appropriate for your blood pressure control.

Other helpful non-drug approaches to bruising include applying ice shortly after impact. Some people insist that castor oil applied to the area can prevent a bruise. Here is a story to check out about this remedy. Want more? Check this one.

We have also heard that “medicinal turpentine” works for bruised fingers. Story and comments here.

People also recommend arnica for bruises. To real more about this herb visit our herb library.
