Q. I read a question about fingertips cracking near the nails. For years I've been using, with near overnight success, a product called Corona Ointment (original formula). It's for horse and cow hooves and cuts on large and small animals.

This product is 50 percent lanolin. It's surprisingly inexpensive.

A. We have been writing about "barnyard beauty aids" for decades. Some topical products designed for animals are also quite helpful (and affordable) for people. One caution, though: lanolin allergy may be a problem for some.

Another reader offered this: "The person with dry skin around fingernails might benefit from Hoofmaker. Groomers use it on horses' hooves. I rub it around my nails while I am watching the evening news. I also put a little on my feet and toenails just before I hop into bed."

We also heard this from a reader: "The teacher who needs to heal her raw hands without making them greasy should try Udderly Smooth Udder Cream. It's the best thing I've found. It really makes a difference and the skin absorbs it so the hands are not greasy afterward." The reader noted that it is advertised on our website. (Udderly Smooth also sponsors our syndicated radio show.)

Are there any treatments for brittle fingernails?

How can I obtain Hoofmaker?

Burt's Bees cuticle cream and hand salve and hand creams are very helpful. Also the old fashioned Rosebud salve, obtainable at places like Southern States and some health stores. Try soaps with more emollients like goat's milk, or rosewater and glycerin. Udder cream is good as well as Avon's creams and silicon glove to keep water from penetrating. I have also used a baby diaper cream with zinc oxide over top the other creams and wore the cotton gloves all night. It was very soothing too.

Read with interest The article on cracked skin around nails. Would appreciate your suggestions for cracked nails. It is a great problem for me in winter months

Is Udderly Smooth tested on animals?

You should be able to get hoofmaker at Tractor Supplu Co. or any feed store that has equine supplys. The corona cream es good for any cracked or chapped skin and is wonderful for diaper rash. Mane n Tail is made by same manufacturer as Hoofmaker and is an excellent hair conditioner.
Rub the Hoofmaker into cuticles nightly and you wont have brittle or cracked nails.

THINK! It's made FOR animals with very very oldtime proven ingredients as stated, such as lanolin, most likely petrolatum (petroleoum jelly), mineral oils, etc. That's why these type creams work as a sealer, i.e. water resistant. It's best to put a moisturizer
on first and then put udder creams or the like over it to seal in moisture.

I use Medicated Chap Stick for cracked finger tips, works great, gone in 2 or three days.

Spot bandaids can help too, allowing those cracks to heal without being stretched or rubbed.

I'll try it!! Hope it works.
