Marijuana may offer relief from pain. A very small study from McGill University in Montreal suggests that pot might ease chronic nerve pain called neuropathy. Twenty-one adults who suffered from neuropathic pain brought on by surgery or accident were randomized to receive low-dose, medium-dose and high-dose marijuana or placebo cigarettes. The subjects rated their pain on an eleven-point scale. They were also questioned about quality of life factors such as mood and sleep.
Pain scores were lower after the volunteers were exposed to high-dose marijuana with 9.4 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Subjects also slept better and were less anxious. At this dose, the cigarettes produced side effects in some subjects, including dry eyes, headaches and burning sensations. The subjects did not report getting high. Other researchers were intrigued by the findings but stressed that long-term safety concerns will need to be addressed before this treatment is used more widely.

I have heard that marijuana can damage the lungs worse and sooner than tobacco. I have neuropathy and smoking is NOT going to be in my future.
I wonder if it would be helpful for shingles pain?
After two knee replacement surgeries, one ankle replacement, and degenerative disc disease, I have found that marijuana is the only thing I can take to get real pain relief. I have tried Oxy, vicodin, darvocet, norco, you name it, but for the most part they only take the edge off of the pain.
Plus with the prescription pain killers you have to worry about your liver, kidneys, and addiction. I have been using marijuana for sometime now and only when I really need it. I have never smoked so smoking marijuana was a little hard on my lungs until I found what is known as a vaporizer. With a vaporizer you don't get any smoke at all, just the pain killing THC. The only side affect I have noticed is the munchies.
I live in California and they sell it medicinally in a lozenge form so you don't have to smoke it.
