Q. I have had a significant cat allergy for more than 25 years, but I recently got a cat on a trial basis after my dog died. Another dog would be just too difficult, but I like having a companion animal.
I've been treating symptoms such as wheezing and itchy eyes with prescription medicines (including an inhaler, eye drops and Flonase). I started brushing my teeth with Crest toothpaste for sensitive teeth after hearing a caller on your radio show say it helped his asthma. Now my allergy symptoms have almost completely disappeared. I'm only using the Flonase because I KNOW I have a cat allergy! Why is this working?
A. We were surprised when a caller told us that Crest Sensitivity Toothpaste had helped his asthma. The active ingredient is potassium nitrate (saltpeter). This compound was used long ago as a treatment for asthma and arthritis.
We doubt that there could be enough potassium nitrate in toothpaste to have much pharmacological activity, but we find your story fascinating. Changing toothpaste is certainly a low-risk approach to dealing with allergy symptoms.

We had a long haired cat that I was very allergic to and shedded constantly. It had to go to the vet for another problem and I had them shave the cat while it was there. After that, I could let the cat sit on my lap for hours without any reaction. I kept the cat's hair trimmed with a beard trimmer (the cat seemed to like it) though not as short as when the cat came home from the vet. The shedding also seemed to decrease.
My son has had Diabetes for 50 yrs. (54 yrs. old now) and the last 10 yrs or so has had very bad asthma attacks. After I read your article in the Youngstown Vindicator I bought him a tube of Crest Sensitive Toothpaste. He said his attacks are fewer and much less severe now. The only thing he has done differently is use the toothpaste.
We think it also is helping his problems with his eyes. Because of the less violent attacks he seems to be having less swelling behind the eyes. I don't know all the technical terms but they were considering surgery to save his sight. He previously had lazer treatments to stop the bleeding but now the blood was rerouting itself and that was not good.
It's only been about 2 months now but we hope and pray the good news continues. I'm so glad someone shared his experience with you concerning very violent asthma attacks. My son was at the point of passing out from those attacks. Thank you for a great column.
I was of the understanding that one should not eat processed meat due to the potassium nitrates. I like the notion of decreased allergy symptoms but I don't want to ingest it if it could be harmful.
After I read about the toothpaste in the paper a few weeks ago I had to try and then comment. I was born with bronchial asthma. I have been in and out of remission my whole 58 years. I have also used different types and brands of toothpastes for years. However, in the past 5 years or so I have had a cough that all Dr's related to the asthma and many things have been tried. So I changed the toothpaste.
Yes, it worked BUT I still must use some meds just not as much. It appears to me that since the sensitive toothpaste is not strong in flavor or "tingle" my dry, funny, irritating, something in my throat, type of cough has subsided. This has allowed me to stop use of cough suppressants, except for colds, and I now I have more productive days.
Hope this will help others.
I tried this product after a coworker gave me a newspaper clipping of this article. IT WORKS ! I have a 16 yr. old indoor cat. My allergies in the last few years have become increasingly worse; despite using a clean air machine and frequent vacuuming. The first time I brushed with Crest Sensitivity toothpaste, I notice a difference. It seem to desensitize my sinus.THANK YOU !!!
After reading an article in my local newspaper about "Crest Sensitivity" toothpaste helping allergy sufferers I began using it. For over a month now my allergies have disappeared.
After using many different nose sprays, Doctors "prescriptions" with little or no effect, I was pleasantly surprised how quickly the "Crest Sensitivity" tooth paste worked.
I now brush 2 to 3 times a day without fail, in fact I look forward to brushing.
I highly recommend using this toothpaste for all allergy suffers, it just might work for you too.
