Dextromethorphan, an ingredient in most over-the-counter cough medicines, is highly controversial. Studies have shown it is no more effective than placebo in young children. The FDA is also concerned about reports that adolescents may be abusing it. The agency has called for a public meeting in September to review the safety and effectiveness of this medication.

When I started hearing about this last year, I knew I wanted to stop giving it to my daughter, but her 9 day colds always ended with several nights of continual coughing, keeping the whole family sleep deprived and on edge. Thankfully, someone mentioned to me to try Vicks, not on her chest, but on the soles of her feet and cover w/socks.

It was like miracle, worked in less then 10 minutes by itself. Compared to the dextro, which was never enough and we almost always had to add Benedryl, and it was still anyone's guess as to whether it would help. On the nights it did, it took at least 40 minutes to kick in. We loved the Vicks. But now we don't even have to use that. Ever since starting my daughter on vitamin D, she doesn't even get coughs - even if she gets a cold, it's only a couple days of sneezing and no cough. Coincidence? It's been 7 months now, including those tough winter months - no coughs!
