Q. I read a recent column about golden raisins soaked in gin. I tried these a few years ago for joint pain and wrote to you about them. I also told you that I didn't use gin, but instead soaked the raisins in a combination of apple cider vinegar and honey.

I DO HOPE you tell people about that option. It is important for people who either don't drink alcohol or shouldn't. It's also less expensive, for those who can't afford gin.

The alternative worked wonders and not just for me, but also for others I know about. Recovering alcoholics in particular should know of the alternative.

A. We were pleased to learn that apple cider vinegar, with or without honey, could substitute for gin in this remedy. You are right that many people should be avoiding the temptation of alcohol, even in small quantities.

How can this information be helpful when it does not say what raisins soaked in gin is USED for. What do you use the raisins for?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: IT IS USED FOR JOINT PAIN AND/OR ARTHRITIS.

I have heard of this raisin remedy. Would you please give the recipe, like how much of each ingredient for a right mixture? Thank you.

I need to know what proportions of each ingredient. I am glad to know this because I do not want to consume alcohol.

What are the proportions of vinegar and honey?

To cv,
The raisin and gin remedy is for arthritis. It's true that this has come up many times on this site, but the person who sent in the apple cider vinegar suggestion didn't state that. "Arthritis" is listed in the tags, however.

How much Apple Cider vinegar and honey should you use and how many raisins do you eat a day? I'd like to try this for my recurring tendonitis. Thanks!

I do not use alcohol so did not keep info. Now I need to know how much apple cider vinegar with raisins, how many raisins to eat per day, how long to soak, etc.

Why do you need to soak the raisins at all? Do dried cherries have the same effect?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WE DON'T KNOW. WE HOPE SOMEONE WILL TRY THE CHERRIES AND TELL US. THEY ARE USUALLY MORE EXPENSIVE THAN RAISINS.

I would like to try this, but how how many times per day? How many weeks or months, or forever? and in what proportions? I have noticed the lack of details before. It would certainly be helpful if you could find out before passing on the remedy. Thanks.

Now try just cider vinegar and honey WITHOUT the raisins. Bet it works just the same!!
It isn't the amount, it isn't the ingredient, it is the belief, the thinking about getting rid of the joint pain. It is called meditation.
Try it and stay away from doctors.

Agree with CP and others that more details would be very helpful! What proportions to soak; for how long; how many raisins are eaten per day?

I tried the raisin soaked in gin treatment ... 9 raisins per day ... but did not notice any decrease in arthritic pain. The pain in my lower back did improve, but the pain migrated to my shoulders and elbows. Also, the gin seemed a bit harsh on my stomach.

My brother used to drink a morning cocktail of cider vinegar and honey in a glass of boiled water every morning to help his arthritis. Eventually, he gave up on that and started taking tablets of chondroitin glucosamine; which he still takes along with going to a physical therapist 3 times a week.

What are the proportions of cider vinegar & honey? Once the raisins are soaked, how many raisins is one to eat per day to be effective?

Please tell me how many raisins to eat a day. Also how much Turmeric capsules or powder to use? Please I have osteoarthritis as well as MS. I hurt all the time. All pain meds. do is make you sleepy. I don't like taking pain pills for that reason. Cramp the soap is a great thing for me thanks. barbara

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THE "DOSE" OF RAISINS IS 9 A DAY.
MANY PEOPLE FIND THAT 1/2 TO 1 TEASPOON OF TURMERIC DAILY IS HELPFUL.

The amounts are two parts vinegar to one part honey. I just made some for my arthritic daughter to try. I used 1/4 cup honey and 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, poured it into a 1/2 pint jar and added the raisins until the jar was full. At 9-10 raisins a day that should be plenty for her to see if it works or not.

How long do the raisins need to soak to be effective?

Should this mixture be stored at room temperatures or refrigerated?

Thanks, GHBjr

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: SOAK UNTIL THE GIN HAS EVAPORATED, LEAVING NO PUDDLES. STORE IN A CLOSED CONTAINER IN THE FRIDGE.
