Will Tonic Water Cause Hearing Loss?

Q. I drink tonic water all the time. (Really it is half tonic water and half regular water to help with the cramps I get in my legs.) A friend told me the other day that tonic water has been linked to hearing loss. Is that true?

A. Tonic water contains quinine, which is why it seems to help with leg cramps. Quinine has been known to cause both hearing loss and ringing in the ears.

The dose you are getting is extremely low, however, so it is not clear that this would be a danger. Tonic water can contain no more than 83 mg of quinine per liter in the US. Since you are diluting your tonic water, you aren't getting very much quinine.

Concerns about quinine toxicity (irregular heart rhythms, blood disorders and severe allergy) led the FDA to forbid its use for preventing leg cramps. When doctors prescribed quinine for this purpose, the dose was 200 to 300 mg a night.

May be you should try the soap under the sheet on your bed or try minerals: zinc, calcium, magnesium... I think sometimes is caused because of a lack of some minerals in the body.

I had some trouble with recurrent severe leg cramps that were so bad my doctor sent me to specialists. The medication suggested had potential side effects that were far worse than any pain, so I didn't take them -- but still suffered terribly.

After an online search for what foods had what nutrients, I started eating 1/2 an avocado daily. And all the cramping and muscle twitching went away. And stay away as long as I eat that 1/2 an avocado daily. I don't know if the important nutrient is potassium, magnesium, or something else -- but I am grateful, so grateful -- for this simple and wholesome remedy to torturous cramps and distracting night-time twitches.

I have used tonic water for several years after starting to get leg cramps in my mid-fifties, I'm 65 now, but I only use it when a cramp starts, just keep a 6 oz. bottle by the bed. Mustard can also work for a quick fix. I have some tinnitus, but that is probably more due to working at the railroad for 30 years.

I guess it's like Hippocrates urged, "First, do no harm." Magnesium is a great remedy for leg cramps -- and you can even use those epsom salts in your bath water to get a dose. It really works to relax you, so it's probably best to do or take at night. I've also noticed recently that I am gaining some hearing in my right ear, since I've been taking oil of oregano. It does a wonderful job at clearing up sinus problems, so perhaps that was causing the loss. It always helps to do your own research too, so you may find a particularly effective product. Amazon has a lot of online reviews that can help.

RECENTLY, the last 6 months, I've been having tinnitus or very high ringing of the ears, it is so bad that sometimes I wake up at night. Does anyone knows a natural remedy or how can at least get better?

Recently I have had cramped ankles and started drinking Tonic water w/quinine. I read lots of negative info about quinine. My question is how much quinine is in a 2 liter bottle of tonic water w/quinine.?????
