Q. For a year and a half, my dermatologist has treated me for psoriasis. First I took cyclosporine and then CellCept.
Like another reader stated, I too developed every side effect listed in the warnings I got with the medication: hair loss, blisters, dry skin and scalp, and blurred vision. Worst of all, I got no permanent relief from psoriasis!
I then tried a turmeric capsule twice a day (one in the a.m. and one at bed time), following your reader's example. Within two weeks, all my psoriasis patches disappeared and my hair loss has all but stopped! I don't even have the 24-hour heartburn I had on both cyclosporine and CellCept.
I cannot believe that with all the possible side effects of the two pricey prescriptions I was taking, such as lymphoma, liver failure and even death, my dermatologist did not suggest turmeric. Maybe it is because this spice found in curry powder can be purchased without a prescription at any health food store. I have not experienced any adverse side effects with the turmeric capsules.
A. Many people with psoriasis find that turmeric or its active component curcumin can be helpful. Not everyone gets benefit, however, and some people develop a severe rash. No one taking the anticoagulant Coumadin (warfarin) should take turmeric medicinally. We have received several reports of excessive bleeding or high INR values from people combining these therapies. INR is a measure of bleeding susceptibility.

Curcumin is quite effective (at least it has been for me) when applied topically. I make a paste out of curcumin powder and skin lotion. This has cured both severe rashes on my feet and ulcers on my legs. It burns for a bit when applied, but the pain is temporary. Since curcumin is used as a food dye, keeping it off your clothes is a problem.
I have been taking CellCept for over a year now. It was given to me to stop hair loss as the result of a condition called Lichena Planopilaris. It certainly did help, and I am slowing being weaned off this medication. It does have a lot of side effects but I decided to take the risk. Lichens Planopilaris is a nasty nasty disease I also use turmeric - I buy the spice and sprinkle it most generously on all my foods. I don't know if it helps but it's easy enough to use.
I look forward to hearing more about this. It's my understanding turmeric has great anti-inflammation properties and my daughter appears to have started having some skin issues. I wonder if since food stays in the body for a while, could I get away with only giving it to her once every few days or so and still have it be affective. Has anyone out there had success at lower than recommended doses?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WE DON'T EXPECT IT WILL BE HELPFUL FOR SKIN ISSUES OTHER THAN PSORIASIS.
I ordered some 1000mg Turmeric Curcumin capsules and have been taking them for a while. It seems to be helping a bit.
I wonder how bad psoriasis can get?! It started on my knuckles on my left hand. Then on my left elbow. And now I have a small spot that started on my right knee.
When people take turmeric for psoriasis, can they stop taking it after the psoriasis is gone, or if they stop taking it, does the psoriasis return?
Tumeric and Curcumin DO NOT work for everyone (sadly, that includes me). People exploring this alternative treatment should know that it is VERY possible to develop severe stomach pain, no matter the form ingested. I developed crippling digestive problems within a few days of taking Curcumin in pill form. I persevered despite this for a few more days, taking it with food, with milk, with antacids. Nothing helped. I developed serious nausea.
Since I experienced NO CHANGE in my skin's condition, with relief, I stopped taking it. Stomach pains were gone in less than a day. And no, I was not overdosing; was taking a minimal daily amount.
BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS STUFF! It can do a lot of damage, and not just to your clothes.
Is there a recommend dosage for turmeric/curcumin taken in pill form?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: CLINICAL TRIAL DOSES OF CURCUMIN RANGE FROM 1500 MG TO 8000 MG (8 GM) PER DAY. IT IS NOT VERY BIOAVAILABLE, SO A LOW PERCENTAGE OF THE DOSE TAKEN GETS INTO THE BLOODSTREAM. TAKING IT WITH SOME SMALL AMOUNT OF A FATTY FOOD MIGHT HELP.
The list of benefits are amazing, there doesn't seem to be much proof, but there are lots of people that swear by it. I'm going to make the paste for my skin and start drinking it as tea soon.
I have lichen planipilaris and have tried everything without success. The UK is like the dark ages in treatment. Does anyone know a place that has prescribed Cellcept in the US? I would be prepared to travel to have a shot at sorting this.
