People who spend a lot of time out in the sun frequently develop age spots as they grow older. Some people find these brown liver spots are unsightly and want to get rid of them. Products like Porcelana or Esoterica contain hydroquinonone. This over the counter bleaching cream gradually lightens brown spots on the skin. It has been available for decades in the US, but has been banned in Europe and Japan because of links to cancer in animal tests. Now the FDA has asked the National Toxicology Program to review the safety of hydroquinone to see if it might pose a hazard from skin exposure. It will be years, however, before there is a definitive answer. In the meantime, people concerned about brown spots should stay out of the sun or use an effective sunscreen.

Would be interested if you have any info on sunscreen risks, and any that are better than others re: chemicals on the skin.
Thank you for the information on skin lightening.
I came up with my own solution for the brown spots on the back of my hands. Every day, after I squeeze the lemon juice into my green tea, I rub the lemon wedge on the back of my hands. Then I just let it dry on there while I drink my tea! I have been doing this for about 2 weeks, and the discoloration is much less already. This costs nothing and as far as I know, there should be absolutely no side effects!
I would certainly be interested in knowing of natural, healthy substances that could be used to lighten such spots. How about a People's Pharmacy broadcast program on skin problems such as brown spots, skin tags, spider veins, and perhaps also wrinkles. . . . . Many folks would appreciate good information about solutions for these and perhaps other skin conditions.
Thank you for your wonderful programs and books.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember a comment made by some tv guest on a talk show. It was about lightening of age spots with crushed garbanzo beans (chickpeas). Evidently the garbanzo bean contains a chemical that reacts with whatever the age spots are made of. I don't remember if anything else was added to the bean paste or how long it was left on. It was spread on the skin. I personally haven't tried this method.
On another tv show with doctors, one said to put vinegar on the spots daily and over time the spots become pale. I did this but I ran out of vinegar and haven't tried it again. The doctor said it had something to do with the light acid content of the vinegar. My skin is very light so I used white vinegar. I put the vinegar in a shallow container with a lid and daily dipped the backs of each of my hands in it. I used my fingers to gently rub the vinegar on the skin. This daily application made my hands become very soft and smooth with no more roughed up cuticles and hangnails and strengthening my nails which tend to tear easily.
