Q. Recently a reader wrote you touting blackstrap molasses as a treatment or cure for hemorrhoids. I am a hemorrhoid sufferer. I've used over-the-counter medications and the prescription ointment Proctosol without much success.

My problem seems to flare up when I eat certain foods, especially spicy dishes, and engage in vigorous exercise such as running or bike riding.

I decided to try blackstrap molasses, taking one teaspoon twice a day. Remarkably, in less than a month I have found relief!

The condition has improved at least 75 percent, with only occasional minor irritation. The burning, itching and even blood spotting has all but disappeared.

Believe me, I was skeptical about this remedy, so even after some initial relief, I purposely ate foods that normally cause a flare-up. Much to my surprise, there was no outbreak. Has anyone else reported success?

A. Your testimonial is the first we have received. We too would be interested to learn of others' experience.

Where can a person buy Blackstrap Molasses? The only molasses I find in our grocery stores is Brer Rabbit brand Molasses. Would this be blackstrap?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: BRER RABBIT DOES HAVE BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES, BUT NOT ALL THEIR MOLASSES IS. IT WILL SAY ON THE LABEL. ASK YOUR SUPERMARKET MANAGER TO HELP YOU FIND IT.

High dose vitamin C completely cured my hemorrhoid in three weeks, after I had suffered from the condition for years. I took vitamin C with every meal, amounting to several grams per day, to the point of bowel tolerance (loose stool). The form of C I took was ascorbic acid and potassium ascorbate, made by reacting ascorbic acid with potassium bicarbonate.

The hemorrhoid started shrinking and just got smaller and smaller until it eventually disappeared and never returned. I still take about a gram of vitamin C a day, as ascorbic acid.

I found this website which gives the nutritional content of black strap molasses. I'm going to look for an organic molasses and try your remedy. My main concern was sugar content, but it does have healthful minerals according to this article.

What has helped me the most is digestive enzymes and probiotics taken at lunch and dinner. I think they are assisting my aging digestive system to process foods more efficiently.

I plan to try the blackstrap molasses, too. I would look for it at Whole Foods or ask at the local grocery store.

Is the fix because stools are softened? We put syrup in baby's bottle when constipated?

I tried black strap molasses per advice in this column. Happy to say it works very well.

I found blackstrap molasses ("Tree of Life" brand, unsulphured) at my health food store. It comes in 16 oz and 32 oz.

As a male in my 60's, I'm concerned about the "significant source" of iron in the black strap molasses. Is 2 tablespoons a day too much? How do I know if I'm getting too much iron?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WHEN YOU SEE YOUR DOCTOR, ASK HIM/HER TO LOOK AT FERRITIN LEVEL. (THIS IS A BLOOD TEST.) THIS WILL TELL YOUR IRON STATUS, HIGH, LOW OR IN-BETWEEN.

I was bleeding like crazy from my hemorrhoids. My hemoglobin was 6.4 (minimum is 12 for women) and my iron level was 5 (minimum healthy level is 45). I had been banded twice, which hurt like crazy and didn't last. I had already had a blood transfusion and surgery was the only remedy left. I read in the People's Pharmacy column in my newspaper about black strap molasses. A bottle of molasses was about two dollars, so I figured I had nothing to lose.

I took a teaspoon twice a day, and much to my amazement, the bleeding stopped completely and immediately! My hemoglobin was at 9 when it was checked about a month later. I only take it now when I start bleeding again. Usually one dose stops the bleeding within 12 hours. I have no idea how this stuff works, but I am so glad I tried it.

**Black strap molasses tastes awful and leaves a gross film in my mouth, so I drink very warm water after taking it, and this cleanses my mouth. It still tastes awful, but it saved me from surgery.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!

I too tried numerous OTC remedies and was resigned to the fact that surgery was the only answer left. I was in absolute misery when I ran across this information in the People's Pharmacy column of the local paper and decided to give it a try. As crazy as it sounds I take 2 teaspoons a day and the improvement has been amazing and immediate. After 3 weeks the problem is 95% better, the bleeding has stopped and the pain is gone. I never post, but this has been so astounding I had to let you know and encourage others to try it.

My wife heard of this remedy. I am pretty young to have had the severity of Hemorrhoids (says my Dr.). I'm only 44. for the past Thur - Sun I have had a lot of blood and pain. On Saturday, my wife brought home the Black strap. I am willing to try anything to keep this from happening again. So its been three days and I take two teaspoons at the same time. ????? Jury is still out. I'll have to update at end of a whole week.

As stated b4, The stuff taste terrible. Warm water swish and scope are your best friends.

I do have prescription meds also, procto foam and cortisone 25% suppository.
I plan on the daily abuse of BSM and hope for results like the ones stated in this page.

My gastroenterologist told me after my first colonoscopy 6 years ago that I had hemorrhoids. I didn't know--couldn't feel them, no irritation, no bleeding. I began the black strap molasses regimen. When I returned for the next colonoscopy last year the same doctor told me that they had completely disappeared. It works for me.

I am very interested in everything I've read thus far on BSM. I have had an extremely heavy menstrual cycle since I had a C-section 5 yrs ago. I went to find some and OF COURSE, no place within a 35 mile radius (that I found) I purchased some ROBUST Molasses in hopes that may have a similar effect. Anyone have any other thoughts or ideas for someone with limited resources?

I have suffered with bleeding and painful hemmoroids for years - having to do sitz baths constantly. A friend told me about the healing benefits of Blackstrap for this condition and I decided to try it. I have only been taking it for less than a week and already the results are remarkable. The bleeding and pain have stopped and I can't believe how great I now feel. I will continue to take this wonderful product for all the benefits it provides, not just the hemmorids.

Black strap molasses is also effective relief for "aches & pains" for myself as well as my elderly dog Sadie. 2 years ago Sadie "got down" and couldn't get up. Before I could take her to the Vet she managed to drag herself under my front porch and wouldn't budge. Desperate, I mixed 1 tsp of Brer Rabbit Black Strap Molasses (Purple edged label) with a dab of peanut butter in her bowl and with a broom handle pushed it to her.

The next morning she was friskily waiting at the front door eager for breakfast....a miracle! She is still doing great.....as long as I dose her biweekly. In real cold weather I do it weekly.
