Epidemiologists have linked high exposure to a chemical used in non-stick cooking utensils to a greater risk for thyroid disease. The chemical is perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and it is also used in treatments to make fabric waterproof or carpets stain-resistant. The researchers examined results from nearly 4,000 adults whose blood was tested between 1999 and 2006. Those with the highest levels of PFOA in their blood had twice the likelihood of thyroid disease compared to those with the lowest levels, although the correlation does not establish a cause-and-effect link.

What about the "hard anodized" cookware? I've been trying to find info on the safety of these products, and haven't found anything yet.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: SINCE IT DOES NOT HAVE A CHEMICAL COATING, IT SHOULD BE SAFE.

Thumbs up ? Only to raise awareness level for the future. How else can this information be used as helpful?

Thumbs down ? No correlation established for cause of thyroid disease. Even if correlation was established, would people throw out their current carpeting and cookware? And would it not already be to late to prevent higher probability of thyroid disease? Would the non stick chemicals be banned?

As a side comment, the fumes from non stick cookware can kill parrots.

I have also wondered about why our thyroids are rarely protected when we get x-rays. more women than men have thyroid issues and we are the ones who get so many mammograms without the lead collar.

I have been trying to use my cast iron cookware more, and also the ceramic. Some new ceramic came out from Martha Stewart that cooks nicely.

I suffer with thyroid disease and wonder also about anyone using armour thyroid medication.

I did get rid of all of my nonstick cookware and replaced it with stainless steel which is hard to find.

I used non-stick cookware for years and do have a thyroid disorder. Does anyone know how to detoxify?
