Q. Is there a neck and head exercise that helps relieve vertigo? I thought I read something to that effect. Drugs like meclizine do not help.
A. A lot depends on the reason for the vertigo. If it is due to Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), then the Epley maneuver can cure the condition within minutes. This is a series of movements of the head and neck that get the crystals from the inner ear back where they belong and restore a sense of equilibrium.
An ear, nose and throat specialist or an audiologist should be consulted for the correct diagnosis. Many can perform the Epley maneuver for you.

I've had three bouts with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), and prefer the Semont maneuver. I know it's working when I begin and the vertigo worsens as I start out on the affected side. You have to know which ear is the problem in order for the Semont maneuver to work.
If the vertigo begins during waking hours, I have obtained very good relief with the Semont maneuver. My longest-lasting bout (about three weeks) began during sleep and was well-established by the time I awakened to terrible vertigo. I now block the right side of my pillow so that I always sleep with my affected ear up or on my back, never with the right ear down.
Many years ago I had a bout of vertigo. It was diagnosed as "unknown" and two different specialists ruled out BPPV as the cause. I underwent a variety of tests to rule out things like tumors and everything checked out OK. Drugs didn't help either.
I have a good friend who visits a couple of times a year. She is an Osteopath and specializes in the manipulative therapy aspects of it. She tried what she called "cranial manipulation". The first session didn't work. Roughly 6 months later she tried again. The vertigo went away in mid-session and has never returned.
Both specialists remain puzzled about the cause of the condition although one now recommends my friend's technique to patients for whom he can find no other cause.
After a fall down 26 steps and landing on my head I suffered from vertigo, among other problems. I was home bound for many years until I started therapy with a Pettibon Chiropractor. I was driving in less than two months! That was seven years ago.
Pettibon therapy uses both manipulation as well as physical therapy and head, hip or shoulder weights. Truly amazing therapy. I'd been though many types of therapy previously too that did nothing.
I am going through vertigo, neck spasms and ears feel plugged all the time.
Doctors cant figure out. My eyes also feel heavy, any suggestions?
Thanks
Taking ginger helps the settle the stomach from vertigo. Just to be on the safe side I take 1000 every day, being I never know when it will appear.
I was diagnosed with Benign Postional Vertigo in the early 1990's. About 5 years ago I decided to stop blowing my nose.
Since I stopped nose blowing I no longer experience vertigo & I get fewer sinus infections.
I had BPPV earlier this semester, and the Epley procedure helped wonderfully. I really liked the fact that it is non-invasive and non-drug based. If the BPPV comes back (as seems likely, as this is the second time I've had it, only it remained undiagnosed the first time and went away on its own after about 6 months) I'd have the Epley procedure again in a heartbeat.
Have had vertigo for 3 months. Checked out brain CT (normal) eye exam (normal) lower abdomen CT (normal) EKG (normal. tried anti-ert- not effective- using Dramamine----need more information about head exercises-please help. HD
