High fructose corn syrup has been blamed for the high rates of obesity in this country, partly because the country has gotten much fatter over the past 20 years while the use of high fructose sweeteners has risen. Now scientists say they have evidence that consuming more fructose puts people at risk for high blood pressure. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that people who took in more than 74 grams of fructose daily were 36 percent more likely to have blood pressures of 140/90 and 87 percent more likely to have blood pressure readings closer to 160/100. There are 74 grams of fructose in about two and a half regular soft drinks, but fructose is also found in baked goods, candy, jam, syrup, honey and dried fruit. The investigators suggest that a controlled study is needed to see if lowering fructose consumption can prevent the development of high blood pressure.

High Fructose Corn Syrup; I was having unexplained diarhea that seemed to follow using HFCS; when I read an article (womens' magazine health section) that HFCS can cause loose bowels and tummy problems I stopped using it. THAT was difficult, because it is in everything, it seems; even in my favorite brand of KETCHUP and BBQ sauce.

I read that HFCS is NOT easily "handled" by insulin, which would explain the rise in obesity, especially in kids that drink "Juice" drinks and sodas.!

I have had type II diabetes for some 25 years and am having a powerful demonstration of the inability of my pancreas to recognize HFCS. I'm in the middle of making holiday fruit cakes and all the candied fruits I need are now produced with HFCS. I did a test taste of a small slice and my usually well controlled blood sugar shot up to almost 200 two hours after eating it and stayed high for many hours. I use no added sugar in my recipe. HFCS is deadly for diabetics!

I like to flavor a large bowl of oatmeal with some apple sauce. I was surprised that when I read the apple sauce label it had high fructose corn syrup AND corn syrup. I guess if you read the label of everything you ate - you'd go nuts. Even those "healthy" soups they have now have lots of sodium!

Try organic apple sauce (cinnamon) sweetened with evaporated cane juice.

Note that agave syrup is high in fructose. I experienced mental confusion after eating food sweetened with agave syrup.
