There is growing recognition that low vitamin D levels are linked with numerous chronic health problems and may even be contribute to deadly cardiovascular complications. Over the last several years researchers have found associations between vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk for diabetes, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, hypertension and several common cancers. Now add premature death from heart disease or stroke to the list.

Finnish researchers studied more than six thousand middle-aged men and women for more than two decades. Those with the lowest blood levels of vitamin D were 25 percent more likely to die of a heart attack. They were twice as likely to die of a stroke. Although the researchers were not prepared to conclude that the low levels of vitamin D actually caused heart attacks and strokes, they did encourage other investigators to determine the optimal range of vitamin D for good health.

How effective is getting vitamin D from sources other than the sun? I am recovering from skin cancer removal, have red hair and live in Florida. Using sun screen and limiting my exposure all my life apparently didn't protect me from skin cancer. And yes, I have osteoporosis and have tried 4 different medications that I am unable to tolerate. So now what?

I've read good things about D-3 --- anybody been taking it for over
a month and seen good results?

I went to the emergency room with my heart pounding, heart palpitations had been almost constant for 3 days. Lots of tests, nothing was done. I was told to go to my family doctor for a follow up. I did, he changed my blood pressure meds to slow my heart down. It did, but the palpitations did not stop. I went to a new doctor. She checked my vitamin D level the first visit. It was 20.4.

She put me on 1000 units of vitamin D and the heart palpitations stopped after 3 days of treatment. She continued to monitor my vitamin D level and after 4 weeks of taking vitamin D my level went to 28, she added another 1000 units to my dosage. My blood pressure is well controlled and I feel great. I know the vitamin D supplement is what stopped my heart palpitations.

What is a low level and what is good? How much Vitamin D should be taken daily?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: 25-HYDROXY-VITAMIN D LEVEL SHOULD BE AT LEAST 20, PREFERABLY ABOVE. 2,000 TO 4,000 IU DAILY IS USUALLY A GOOD DOSE.

I've done much internet research dealing with qualified professionals on
Vit D-3 and without going into great technical detail, I've found the
following information to be very acceptable to me:

A growing number of researchers who have studied Vitamin D3 are almost begging the general public to consume more of this important nutrient. Due to Vitamin D3’s high safety profile in doses up to 10,000 IU per day and because of the wide role it plays in our health, consuming 2,000 to 4,000 IU per day of this nutrient at times of the year when sunlight is scarce is a prudent way to improve overall health.

If you Google Vit-D3 you'll find
much positive information: I'll be taking up to 10,000 IU of Vit D3 starting today.

My Mother and Father lived on a farm, all there life, got plenty of sun. Vit. D and my mother had a stroke and father had a heart attack, but they did not take vitamins, and both lived to be in the middle of there 80's, lots of farmers died young, with heart attacks, also, which had plenty of Vit. D.

I do not think that has any thing to do with it, it is just how strong your heart is, and bones and the whole human body, we are all different when it comes to diseases!

Good lord yes, Hank! Stop whatever you are doing and go at once to: The Vitmain D Council web site. Read the information as if your life depended on it because it does. I have researched vitmains and supplements for 13 years and as of about 18 months ago I have concentrated on vitmain D solely. To sum it all up: Vitmain D supplementation is absolutely, positively, with out question THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ANYONE WILL EVER DO FOR THEIR HEALTH!!!! Apologies for emphasis but if anything it is an understatement.

My parents were alive to see the dawn of antibiotics. We are here to see the realization of the importance healthy levels of vitamin D, year round. It is that important - and more so for those over 40 years of age. It may be of interest to know that in the coming years vitamin D deficiency will be recognized as the cause of most cancers (see DINOMIT theory of cancer- seriously!), the root cause of heart disease and all associated conditions, the cause of autism, schizophrenia, obesity, general clinical depression, most birth defects, premature aging of chromosomes, gum disease, dementia, heart attacks, strokes, chronic pain, susceptibility to colds and flus, bone disease, tooth loss, crooked teeth, muscle wasting, diabetes, and lord knows what else. All of the aforementioned afflictions are already confirmed as being associated with vitamin D deficiency. And did you know that the all cause mortality risk of vitamin D deficnecy is 54%? That's twice as high as heavy smoking!

In the end nothing matters but being replete with vitamin D. It is more important than anything you will ever do for your health or those you love.

Thanks CLS for your comment. While I've followed many of the recommendations for vitamins and minerals intake, I was enlightened
by my daughter/nutritionist recently about Vit-D3 and its importance
so I'm now taking 10,000 IUs of it daily for the past week.

I'm not surprised that the CDC keeps talking about vaccines, but they
never mention building up one's immune system with good food and
supplements -- instead it's promoting injecting a form of virus into
bodies to "have prevention" which is still unproven to be factual.
The CDC should be telling everyone to concentrate on everything that's
necessary to build our immune system which is our greatest "protection"
from getting sick from so many possibilities.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WE WILL INTERVIEW VITAMIN D EXPERT BRUCE HOLLIS, MD, ON SATURDAY, 11/21/09. BE SURE AND LISTEN TO THE SHOW FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE EFFECT OF VITAMIN D ON THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AS WELL AS THE APPROPRIATE DOSE OF VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTS.
