Q. I have suffered from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for months. I read that Archway Coconut Macaroon cookies might help and looked for them with no success. When I heard they were no longer available, I came up with an alternative.
I make up instant vanilla pudding (using ½ skim milk and ½ yogurt). Mix for two minutes and throw dried coconut. It is good and so simple.
I also take two enteric-coated peppermint capsules a day. Between the peppermint and the coconut my digestive woes are gone. This formula also works for an elderly neighbor who needed diapers before I came up with this solution.
A. Thanks for sharing your success. Data suggest that enteric-release peppermint pills can ease symptoms of IBS (Digestive Diseases and Sciences, online, June 9, 2009). There are no studies on coconut, but many readers tell us it helps control diarrhea.

How do you take the pudding? Half cup a day, one cup day or more?
Archway Coconut Macaroons are still available at Food Lion in Virginia.
Pure, unadulterated organic coconut is best. Having said that, munching on a handful of sweetened shredded coconut from the baking aisle of the supermarket provides the same benefit as a couple of coconut macaroons.
I have used the coconut macaroon cure for diarrhea and it works beautifully. As for the "Archway macaroons" not being available, ----------they definitely still make them 'cause I buy them regularly at the Publix Super Market down here in South Florida.
It has been my experience, when being unable to find something out there in the marketplace, to go online and search the company--------like "Archway Cookies" for example. You can usually find out alot of good info when you do that.
How much dried coconut is added?
Two things: Many are mis-diagnosed with IBS when in fact they have Celiac Sprue (gluten intolerance). Look it up. Especially if you have northern European ancestry, ask your MD for a blood test for Celiac. If positive, s/he will want to follow up with endoscopy to confirm damage to the small bowel. This is the only autoimmune response condition that is totally curable with a gluten-free diet.
Second, it may partly be the yogurt that keeps your digestive system on track. So many prepared foods in our diet we have lost the natural flora in the gut that aid proper digestion. Introduction of yogurt cultures bring some of that back.
Just an FYI, Archway has started making the macaroons again. I just saw them in the stores.
I, too, was sad to see the bankruptcy notice of Archdale. However, I recently discovered the famous cookies, including coconut macaroons, available at a local Publix store. They are even better than ever.
Great points on the gluten intolerance -- I suffer from this, and it is much more common than we might suspect. I've certainly used the enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules (just don't bite into them!) for IBS. And oregano oil has a similar effect. Some other good options include brown rice green tea (Genmaicha) and blackberry tea. And definitely make sure you take acidophilus or probiotics -- because a lot of your immune system is in the GI tract, and it helps to keep it well stocked with the right bacteria. Children born through Caesarian section, for example, often lack some of these bacteria. I'll have to try the coconut, too. It sure makes a great antiviral!
Archway Macaroons are back on the shelves. I just purchased some at Kroger in Houston.
Problem with that vanilla pudding recipe is that sometimes IBS is paired with lactose intolerance, so its' sometimes hard to know what's causing the problem. A sprinkle of coconut on cereal (using soy or almond milk) in the morning is a good helper with this condition.
I'm ready to try the Archway macaroons as all medications have failed. How many cookies are you supposed to eat each day? Thanks. I would love if this worked so I no longer feel like a captive.
In the Peoples Pharmacy "Famous Home Remedies" book it says to take 2 a day. That is what I take and so far it has worked very well.
One of your readers with psoriasis recently commented that she took turmeric and bromelain three times a day and "within a short time" her psoriasis was gone. My question is, how much turmeric and bromelain?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THE INITIAL REPORT WE GOT WAS FROM A PERSON WHO USED ONE TEASPOON OF TURMERIC DAILY.
Where do I get enteric-coated peppermint capsules? I was hoping to buy it locally instead of on-line but CVS, Walgreens, & Wal-mart don't have it. Can someone recommend a real store or a good, reliable mail order place?
Thanks
