Millions of Americans are now taking dietary supplements that are not well regulated by any government agency. Many dietary supplements contain a wide variety of undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients. Without oversight, unscrupulous manufacturers will take advantage of an unsuspecting public. It's time for the U.S. to catch up with other developed countries and ensure the herbs and dietary supplements sold on health food shelves contain what they claim.

Get the unscrupulous manufacturers first; but keep the FDA out of what we can buy in a health food store! The government has tried for years to take our freedom away from using and buying supplements. The big pharmaceutical/insurance industry want to take this over and control it through our government so they can profit from it and not let "we the people" and our doctors decide what is best to take; instead of taking a lot of their deadly drugs.
I have successfully taken many vitamins, minerals and a few herbs because I cannot tolerate most medical drugs. My complementary/alternative M.D. orally prescribes many of the supplements that I take. If I were to listen to conventional doctors they would have me on very costly drugs that have made me a lot sicker than I was. Most reputable health food stores sell very good quality vitamins, minerals and herbs.
I don't trust the FDA; just take a look at a lot of the drugs that have harmed many people over many years that they had approved. And look at how many food products that we buy in the grocery store that are harming many people. The government needs to start there also.
Right on! We also need uniformity of ingredient strengths, either in mg. or international units, on the labels. It does me no good to try and figure out the conversion to one or the other when I'm in a store seeking to make a purchase. It would also be a good idea to have manufacturers print on the label the toxic dosage for the main ingredient in the product.
I trust my own judgment and even the 'unscrupulous manufacturers' more than I trust the FDA.
I think establishing a separate division within the FDA would be a good idea, rather than creating a separate agency. I may be wrong, but I choose to believe they are trying to do a good job. If they are not, we should press for a house cleaning there and not just sidestep them while shaking our fists.
Just what we need! Washington already wants to run every aspect of our lives. One of the few freedoms we have left is the freedom to take a good vitamin or mineral and see results for not a lot of money. Drinking concord grape juice, pomegranate juice, tart cherry juice has helped me in so many ways. No thanks to Crestor and the other poisons or doctors almost pressure us to take.
I agree with the first three comments.
Keep the government and FDA out of our choices of supplements and vitamins.
They don't do a great job of overseeing our prescription medication safety now. I shiver to think what would happen if they had the power to regulate our supplement choices.
